My Review of Ashes
« on: 03 April 2011, 04:28:11 »

Ashes definitely uses a different approach than the three previous albums. But is that a bad thing? Definitely not!! In fact, the album manages to deliver in a very strong way and still maintain that quality of epicness thaat tristania always had.  Tristania's sound is stripped clean in this album. Gone are the choirs. Gone are the orchestras, the violins....leaving nothing but a raw dark sound. Vibeke's voice is no longer backed by choirs but is left bare...and it still manages to shine beautifully and send chills down one's spine. The overall sound of the album is very dark. It treads into the regime of doom/death metal...more so than the highly gothic previous albums. It's an emotionally unstable piece of work and it does its work well.

Libre - Great song. Very vicious and riveting. Vibeke's parts seem to be ethereal...a shadow of grandeur. It's very haunting and well done. 4.5/5

Equilibrium - An emotional and powerful song with a unique sound. Vibeke's lines are enlightening, as well as her voice and Osten delivers a wonderful morose feel. 5/5

The Wretched - One of the best songs on the album. The song is very creepy and eerie, as well as aggressive. It sends chills down my spine and I can't stop listening to it. The lyrics are haunting and full of dread...representing the album as a whole very well. 5/5 ++++

Cure - The song is beautiful and Vibeke's vocals are absolutely gorgeous and spine chilling. Yet, the song as a whole tends to drag a bit and get a bit boring. But definitely not a bad song. 3.5/5

Circus - Very creepy song that definitely scares me. But not in a bad way. It has such a strange, interesting, and agressive sound. It's also very eerie, especially the ending. Definitely deserves recognition as one of the best songs on the album. 5/5 +++++

Shadowman - Hands down the best track on the album,. It's so emotional and dream-like. The lyrics crawl under your skin and the vocals are so riveting. Vibeke's performance in this one won me over to this track. Absolutely amazing. 5/5 +++++++++

Endogenesis - A very epic and versatile track. The beginning sequence with the acoustic guitar is absolutely amazing and the harsh vocals are driving and just plain awesome. Vibeke's vocals are beautiful and soothing. Definitely a track worth recognition. 5/5 +++

Bird - A decent song. Vibeke's vocals are good, but the overall song doesn't do much for me. It just doesn't stick out. 2.5/5

Vocal Performance: 5/5
Instrumental Performance: 5/5
Lyrical Performance: 4/5
Overall Feel: 4.5/5
Total: 18.5/20 (A)

i didn't include The Gate on accident because i don't have it on my version.
But i'll rate it now.

The Gate - A very epic and forlorn sounding song with amazing lyrics and great vocals!! I especially love the eerie sounding piano that is played during the song, and Vibeke's small vocal lines just add to it. 5/5 ++

Agreed. It's a pity that not everyone gets to hear it.
I also love how the song titles on Ashes aren't the usual "most heard line of the chorus" but either totally unrelated to the literal content of the song (Libre, Equilibrium, Shadowman, Endogenisis, Cure, Circus) or are just one word picked on a seemingly random basis (The Wretched, Bird, The Gate) from the lyrics. More of that on Illumination and Rubicon, too.

I believe there was a song called Ashes but it became The Ravens on Illumination, though the word Ashes remains in the lyrics. Might have been a fun trend had the original title stuck - a song called Ashes on Illumination, a song called Illumination on Rubicon... :) Reminds me slightly of Borknagar who have an album called Origin after a song on a previous album, an album called Universal named after a song from much earlier in their career, and a song called Quintessence named after another earlier album. :)

Guess I need to treat myself to In the Wake and Caprice, which I believe are the only two Tristania songs that I haven't heard. Maybe I'm missing out on something beautiful.

i agree about Vibby's voice on Endogenisis, although i'd add that it's a bit depressing
