It's difficult to choose but I think I'll vote for Shadowman or Endogenesis.

My least favorites would be The Wretched and Circus. They're still great pieces but the lack of Vibeke is a short-coming compared to the other songs.

THREE talanted vocalists! not just VIBEKE...

Well if you look in the last page of the booklet you will find that Anders and Einar also sing that give us FIVE and not three, the problem is that I cannot recognize their voices, anyone can identify their voices???

I think you got me wrong there. It's not that I dislike any of the two songs I mentioned. It's just that I prefer songs where Vibeke contributes a great deal. The other vocalists work great as an oposite pole to her or sometimes singing along with her as a choir. Songs that are dominated by growls aren't as interesting for me. However, I appreciate the complex guitar riffs in those songs, and the drums and eary keyboards are also great. It works well as a contrast to the calmer songs and contributes to the diversity of (ASHES). I think it wouldn't be my favorite album if there where just songs like The Wretched or Circus. On the other hand it probably wouldn't be my favorite album if there were just calm songs. It's the diversity that makes it outstanding.

Now, after I gave it tens of listens I can choose my second favourite _ Endogenesis, pity I can't vote twice.
Don't throw stones at me but I still think that  Equilibrium is the weakest song and I'm still wondering why it is chosen to represent the album

I don't believe that Equilibrium serves the purpose to represent the album. I rather think that it was chosen because it might be the catchiest song for a broader audience who isn't used hard music with plenty of extreme growls. I'm sure that a lot of people who will buy the album just because liked the Equilibrium video end up disappointed. But as long as they shell out the dough for the record nobody really cares. It's business.

hmm.... i won't call Equilibrium catchy... imho no song on Ashes really is..

I'd chosen Libre for the video I suppose, even if it's not my favourite...

I voted vor Endogenisis now... but it was no easy decision...

I didn't mean catchy as in radio pop music. I just thought that it might be the more appealing to common audiences than The Wretched or Libre.

Hmm... imho most people would think of Equilibrium that it is boring imho...  and Libre does "rock" and therefore it would appeal to people who appreciate harder music too...

Maybe you're right, but growls in songs that seek out airplay are a big NO-NO! I know there are even death metal videos, but I've never seen those played aside from late night metal-only shows.

I agree Equilibirium should represnt Ashes, its my least fav songs, but when compared to the other its most catchy, hell my mother likes it :P
so it would be a wise choice to sell it, hope it airs on MTV!

I thought it was aimed at me because I said something about the lack of Vibeke in certain songs. Well, nevermind.

Don't u think these two sentences are rather contradicting? If it is chosen because it is the catchiest song ( with what I don't actually agree) then it IS MEANT to represent the album for the broader audience. But there will be people who haven't heard of Tristania at all and they'll get the wrong impression that this is Tristania's style, which is only partly so.
I don't understand why a band should release as a single or just shoot video for their "catchiest" song, when it doesn't stand for their style so much. After all Tristania is a metal band and the music they make is for metal fans. Why should they try to attract other fans that have no idea whatsoever what  metal is about???

I don't see any contradiction in my post. But I agree with most of what you're saying. If I had to chose a song from (ASHES) to represent the album I would chose Endogenesis because I think it is very diverse in itself. It features most styles Tristania present on the album. I guess the reason why such a song is not chosen for video or single output is, as I mentioned before, the hassle to get it on air. It's long, and there are a few too many brutal parts in it that won't go on rotation. If nobody plays it there's no increase in record sales. On the other hand when you got a tune out that gets aired once in a while then people get to know the name Tristania. Of course they're fooled by a track like Equilibrium because with Cure there is only other track on (ASHES) that is similar in style. I still have doubts about even a track like Equilibrium getting much airplay.

I remember that Anders said in an interview that there will be no single, and they want to deliver a whole package with the album. I appriciate that statement a lot because it clearly says that (ASHES) is not a sell-out deal. They're not jumping on the money train with bands like Nightwish and Evenescence. They do their music as they want to do it with full artistic freedom.

It's kind of strange that there's a video without a single but in that genre it's not uncommon. There wasn't a single for Evenfall either.

Why didn't anyone else vote for Circus? The atmosphere and the lyrics are most brilliant! It is a masterpiece on a fantastic album and I think it represents the macabre emotion on Ashes!
