Ok...I translated half-interview so far, wanted to share this with you  until I get more time to translate the 2 pages left, since it's too big lol. Good for english practice  :D

"Ilumminated ones"

Illumination is the title of the new Tristania album and have been
considered as the "Illumination" of the band, which now sounds modern and mature. Produced by recognized Waldemar Sorychta, the album has as special guest Vorph, the vocalist of Samael. Guitarist Anders Hidle called us from Norway to tell the details of this album e declare his appreciation for the brazilian fans. The leader of Tristania is very glad, since he believes that with this album all of the seven band members will be able to quit their jobs to dedicate exclusively to the job of gothic musicians.
In 10 years, Tristania released five albums. And they are all very
differents! Illumination, the new work, is the top of this constant
movement of the norwegians and has been considered the "illumination" of the band, both in musical or personal aspects. Much more matures, their music sounds uniform, modern and adult. But of course part of this is due to experience of Waldemar Sorychta, that has been about to produce a Tristania album since 1999.
All these good news made fans feel proud, mainly brazilian fans that
are in big number, and the most enthusiastic ones, as the band itself
says. That is, while german Rock Hard did a small one page interview to talk about the new album, here on brazilian Rock Hard the band is the highlight of the magazine cover this month. This news made Anders, leader and main composer of the band, feel very ecstatic. "Is it serious we're gonna be the cover of Rock Hard - Valhalla? Please, send me some samples of this magazine", says the guitarist very enthusiastic, as he thinks with this album Tristania will reach a good level of popularity and then they will say farewell to their jobs,
dedicating entirely to the band.

Anders, the title of the album, Illumination, could have different
meanings, but through the name of some songs like "Mercyside", "Fate", "Lotus" and "Sacrilege" I assume the lyrics have a spiritual view. Am I right?

Could it be so, since some of these songs you mentioned bring out
religious themes. But we are talking about religious fanatism. In fact,
Illumination has a double meaning, since while it shows a connection
with the lyrics - even though it's not a conceptual album - it also
refers to our prior album. Ashes was an album who brought a more dark, obscure and introspective sound, while the new album is more vigorous and energic. So the title Illumination ends up creating this supposed aversion to the prior work. This title is an abstract form of
representing the album in its whole form.

You've explained pretty fine about the sounding process of "illumination", but did this happen aswell with the lyrics? I mean, is there a maturity, an illumination regarding the lyrics, since in the past you used to write about the dark side of life?

We still keep writing about the dark side of life. Our music is dark
and we want the lyrics to be in connection with it. The lyrics of this
album are divided in two groups: on the first, there are those ones
that deal with our personal experiences, and on the second there are
lyrics which talk about the world problems, like the case of religious
fanatism as I commented before. Look around the world and see all this wars and atrocities that occur in the name of religious fanatism. I think this theme is very rich and can be explored in many ways. The track "Fate", for example, works like an examination of a suicidal's mind who carries a bomb. We aren't trying to understand what goes through his mind, but observing the personalism of a person who is capable of auto-exploding himself into an airplane in the name of something he believes. But the bigger evolution we had with the lyrics was the composition process. This time we composed the lyrics in parallel with the music composition, while in the prior albums we did the songs before, and only after we did the lyrics. This way the interaction between lyrics and music is the best possible, because one thing inspires another.

In fact, the are many bands and musicians who don't care about lyrics. The music itself is always priority and the message stands in the last case. To me a work like that sounds imcomplete, empty and without soul.

For us the music is so important as the lyrics. Lyrics are the way to
describe the feeling of a song. Lyrics support music. In Tristania this
is the vision when we compose. Composing is like taking pics. This pic needs to be complete and only when lyrics and music work together you can catch the atmosphere. In the end, lyrics and music are both sides of the same thing.

And behind this importance that lyrics represent to Tristania, is there any message or point of view you defend?

No! We don't want to transmit any message with our lyrics. In the
issues concerning religion, for example, we don't want to take any
conclusion. Tristania lyrics must to work more like a scape or a
journey through the boarded issues. We don't want to say anything to people. All we want is to understand and appreciate that atmosphere created through the communion between lyrics and music.

But even though you don't have the intention of transmiting a message, you care for writing lyrics with content. There are bands and musicians who see music just for fun and talk about any banal issue just to make it rime.

Music isn't only fun. Of course there's the side of entertainment, but
music does not mean this only. But for us, the important thing is to
compose songs we think they're high level, which brings enthusiasm and, in the end, someone feels the same we did. It's all about to compose music the way we would like to hear. For us this is much more important than to transmit a message.

I could be wrong, but I noticed a certain simbolism in the cover of the new album. What do you want to represent after all with all those insects of the cover?

There isn't a profound symbology. We've decided to work with the same artist who did the cover art of our prior album, Ashes. We were very pleased with the cover of Ashes, but the new album is very different from the prior, thus it needed a very different cover aswell. So we gave all artistic freedom to the guy who drew the cover. We gave him the songs and lyrics and requested him to create something from his interpretation of our music. The chosen art was the one among the various ideas he sent to us. We immediately thought this art fitted the album. It's hard to explain what means each element on the cover because, as I said, there isn't a profound symbology behind this. The main thing is that in the end, the cover, title and purpose of the album wound up fitting each other.

Is there any connection between the title and the pic of Vibeke on the cover?

There's nothing special in this context. Together with the songs and
lyrics we also sent some pics to the guy who made the cover, and since we had given all freedom for him to create, he ended up using one of our pics. In the end, we liked the result and ended up choosing this cover art with Vibeke's pic, since it was different from the other gothic metal band's covers.

Until which point do you think it's important the graphic work of an
album, mainly nowadays when people are downloading albums by internet and burning them on cd-r's?

It has essential importance. The graphic work is part of the whole
pack, together with the music and lyrics. The cover of an album is like a complement for the whole atmosphere and feeling of the album. Besides, Tristania's music is not meant to be heard on the computer. We make music to be heard with attention, and the cover is an important piece in this context. I grew up with into the vinyl's culture. When I was ten years old I met Kiss's vinyls from 70's. When I listened to the first one I got crazy then searched for all their other albums. I recall myself listening to them with the cover and lyrics in hands. It was a fantastic sensation! So I think it's extremely important that an album be formed by these three aspects: music, lyrics and cover.

I totally agree with you, but unfortunately this isn't the reality
anymore. Nowadays people don't buy CD's anymore and download them for free over internet without cover and lyrics. In the end they listen to the albums without even knowing the name of the songs.

Well, if the music becomes for free it won't be possible for anybody to make albums anymore. I see in a positive way this current problem
meaning that the record companies have being forced to turn down the prices of CDs to make people buy them instead of downloading illegally through internet. But I believe that record companies are
doingsomething to make the music digital commerce be possible, offering the whole album, including the artwork, for a more accessible price.
Besides, this problem of illegal download affects big popular artists
such as Britney Spears or Robin Willians. Metal bands like Tristania
don't suffer that much with this. In general, metal fans are very
dedicated and want to buy all cds. So, the free download serves to let the fan take a listen and meet an album, and if he likes he buys the CD. In the end this free download question, while brought some damage, also brought positive things as the facilitation on the promotion of a work.

Musically, Illumination got me surprised. I didn't expect this current sound. To me it seems like you've abandoned the orchestrations to invest on a darker and straightener sound.

Thanks. We already released five albums and all of them are differents one another. We never planned anything about how an album should sound, we just met together to make music. And as we always kept contact with different styles of music, this wound up reflecting in Tristania's music somehow. We have always worried to compose good music and never for what direction to take. And this process was the same for Illumination. In fact, when we were composing I couldn't have a whole idea of how this album would come out. Only when we started to mix we got an idea of what we were creating. For us is very important to work with this freedom and this is the reason which Tristania changes from album to album. We're always changing. Both as persons and musicians.

There's a huge difference between this album and the priors. You're much more mature.

Illumination can be seen as a progression of Ashes, however being very different from it. In fact, Illumination is a reaction to Ashes,
because even though it's different, it still brings a link that makes
people recognize it's an album by Tristania. And this occurs with all
of our albums. These differences are due to our evolution as composers and musicians all over these ten years with the band. We're really in our best phase.
