Favourite Ballads
« on: 16 March 2011, 07:52:23 »

ok, i leave the chance to change votes so if new songs come out we can sort of update the poll. and, 3 choices as i like hehe ;)

before everyone starts looking for me with a loaded m16 because i didn't feature that particular song or because i'm a poser who says that song xy is a ballad when it's not, i tried to mix personal tastes and objective considerations as good as i could. i left WW and BtV out because i wouldn't consider any of their songs "really" ballads... i mean, slow doesn't mean necessarily a ballad song, otherwise all funeral doom albums would be made just of them! ;D

but i accept any critic and if you guys want we can change it! hope you'll find nice, anyway.

my votes go to Shadowman, Ab Initio and (argh, so hard) Exile. but amnesia is threatening a lot to enter this chart. and of course it's been hard also to leave out Tender Trip but i did it since i like the latest live version far more than the one on cd and so i ignored it.

Only 3... wtf?
Anyways, I voted Tender Trip on Earth, The Ravens, Exile. Even though I like a good half of the list a lot.
On another day, it might be Cure, Shadowman and ... Exile, though. :)

when i complained about the fact that albums-favourites polls have just one choice no one gave a f@ck! ;D so i thought it was good for most of people here and i put just three choices here hehe but don't think it has been easy for me, i spent at least 10 mins thinking...

Well... yeah, the point IS to get people thinking. I spent a few minutes considering different choices: for me, only Exile was obvious.

it was so easy for me, i mean, you put 2 of the songs/ballads i love the most: Ab Initio, i've always said i'm in love with this song, it just so beautiful and perfect, Vibby's voice is so relaxing, everything in this song is beauty/ Deadlands, i loooooooove this song, it's my fave Illumination song , and one of the ones i love the most of the bands i like, it's like Ab Initio, perfect /Deadlocked, i've been in love with this song these days, in fact, with the intro, i think this part could have perfectly been a kind of intro for the album, although i also like the rest of the song. Love it, it makes me feel EXCELLENT

...imho :P

Deadlock: a powerful song. The whispered voice is really creept, and I think it says ''the rope around your neck'', which makes it even more creepy. The lyrics are not very clear, and the music is also hard to place.

Protection: dramatic and cool! ุsten's lyrics are at their best, and Mary sings them perfectly.

Exile: beautiful and threatening! This one is so emotional, with the climax being ''Burning in water...''. It keeps growing on me.

I believe they cowrote this one based on a story Mary brought in.

Oh aye, it's the crown of the album.

http://www.spaziorock.it/intervista.php?&id=227 There, at the end where she speaks a bit about some tracks, she says:

PROTECTION

it's a song inspired to a fact that really happened. i wrote the first draft when i knew that the mother of a friend of mine has died to cancer. after having created the melody ุsten wrote the lyrics more completely, interpreting the meaning of my words. it's about a mother who consoles her daughter after her death, trying to make her understand that life goes on, pushing her in order she finds the strngth to go on in herself.

i don't have time now to check if this interview has already been translated; i'll do it tomorrow or on monday!

as for me, only low points are patriot games and emerald piper.

My votes go to Shadowman, Deadlocked and The Ravens.

Not that I don't like the "Mary-Ballads", but imo, they can't survive in comparision to those from the older albums. If I would've too chose from Rubicon, I would say Exile, I guess.

But... Tender Trip on Earth isn't a real ballad, or? I would not say that. It's way too powerful for that, and not even a little bit sad, imo. But anyhow, you chose it, so I won't say anything against it.
Altough I think that The Modern End would have fitted better than Tender Trip on Earth.

So, why those three I voted for?

Shadowman is a really creepy song. If I would be able to get goosebumps, I would have them here. And it carries so much truth in it. Just too good to vote NOT for it =)

Deadlocked is a very moving song. I love the piano parts so much! And the lyrics... just haunting. And the whispering in the middle of it... almost makes me shiver.
My words just aren't enough to describe this awesome song.

And The Ravens... well, the chorus it the main reason why I love this song so much. It's just breathtaking. And Ostens voice in this one... more than just great.
Oh, and I like the norwegian part ;)

Cure would be my favorite one, then deadlocked and in 3th place would be deadlands, Vibeke sounds amazing in all of them!

I have to admit, quite a few of these songs I never really thought of as ballads - e.g. Tender Trip on Earth with the heavy/growl part, Exile with that heavy triplet riff, even Shadowman & The Ravens, not typical ballads to me.
So if I exclude those, that leaves ... Cure, Ab Initio, Deadlands, Protection, The Passing  ... still too many to choose :P

I had such a hard time with this!!!!

I voted for Tender Trip On Earth, Shadowman, and Amnesia...
but if I could, I would've also picked Deadlocked, Exile, and Destination Departure

Destination Departure always makes me cry
and there is something of Tender trip to earth that is special. Osten and Vibeke singing together so quietly  ::)

wow it seems that votes are very well distributed!

anyway, i'm sorry if the song choices i made disappointed someone, like naudiz pointed out. i tried to be as objective as i could in focusing at least on ballad-ish feeling, like tender trip has in my opinion. also other songs like deadlocked or exile or the ravens have faster, extreme parts so... another proof that tristania don't wrote banal songs!
