I would recomend A sequel of Decay

It's a difficult question...uhm...the first Tristania's song I heard was "Angellore" and it touched me very much,so I think I could recommend this one,or maybe "Angina",'cause the first time I heard it I cried.

For me,just for my personal pleasure,I choose "Endogenisis".

with Angina you cried? well my little cousin is afraid of the growls in that song...  :P  so she also cries...
Just Joking...
Angellore is still one of my fav. But A sequel of Decay is more complete song as a whole imho.

My first Tristania song was probably Libre and it was part of "cultural preparation" to Nightwish gig in Bayreuth, where Tristania was as support band, because I've never heard them before :D . I almost fell from my chair.
But for newbie, I would choose something more tender :), Equilibrium, for example, or maybe something from World of Glass.

oh i've misenderstood...thanks Nordlys!

Well, in my opinion there isn't a song that someone should here first of all by Tristania...maybe the right thing should be to listen to one of all album...

for example Cease To Exist, Midwintetears, Opus Relinque, Angina, Wormwood, Libre ... ;)

so in this way you can see the development of Tristania from the begininng to today... :)

Well I'd have to say anything from BTV, but also I think Pale Enchantress is a good starter.

Yeah, I agree Pale Enchantress would be a good one to start with. I'd also recommend December Elegy - that song is such a complete masterpiece! Also, My Lost Lenore and Angina. I'd even recommend Dementia too... it's a nice short song to start off with, except it's not B&B.

Accessible songs would be Tender Trip on Earth. Since that song starts off right away with death vocals and goes into the angelic vocals, it'll give someone a really good idea if they'll be able to tolerate that type of music or not. Not everyone can stand the death vocals. :P

Well every one of the songs are in themselves a masterpiece, people just have varying favorites.  If you wanted to introduce someone to Tristania, just throw them a random cd, and have them listen to it from front to back, if they don’t like one of the aspects of tristania, then its not for them.  Shouldn’t hide different songs from someone if you think their interest would sway.

Of Ruins and a Red Nightfall was my first one, but I'd also suggest Tender Trip on Earth.

I think you pretty much got each song from each album mentioned once at this point ;)

I think Angellore would be a good starter for someone who has not listend to Tristania before. You have Vibeke and østen's clean soft vocals, some real heavy vocals, soft music, heavy guitars... All the qualities of a song by Tristania without being too in your face for a first try    B)

always helpful ;)

to answer you question:

-the simplest, most commercial, catchiest etc. song :
could be World of Glass ( good to sing along and easily memorable, IMO quite accessible
very suitable is also Equilibirum, has a nice and catchy chorus, no grunts (am I wrong?)

But what I would recommand more (because BTV is just a masterpiece to me, and so I always take something form BTV) is Angina, one oft ther shorter and catchier songs on BTV, and I thin also quite accessible.

Actually, the first dose of Tristania I had was the Equilibrium video, and I strayed away for months. Then I heard Crushed Dreams and I was hooked.

I'd suggest Angina :)
Not too long, not too tiring for a newbie and (my opinion mode on) shows Tristania in their best form (my opinion mode off). :P
This song contains everything that we love Tristania for - great female vocals, growls, nice drumming and beautiful violins :)

Come on, people! There are not doubts: that song should be Angellore. Is their catchiest song ever. The gutural voice is not so heavy nor the guitar riffs. It's just because of the voice of Osten. The second song that would be O.K. is A Sequel of Decay, which is a little heavier than Angellore and have great choirs.
