It must be angellore, cuz the song has all style of Tristania; all vokals, and symphonic characteristic.

The first song I've heard is "Open ground"

but someone should hear the whole "Beyond the veil" or the whole "Widow's weeds"... (Tristania with Morten)

mm the first Tristania songs I heard were Lotus and Fate. I thought they were lovely since they're much lighter and they fitted my music taste back then perfectly. After that I found out Tristania has songs, much more amazing than them and I loved everything I heard. It was love at first sight!  :D :D

In general though, I think the song that 'a newbie' should hear from them first is not a particular one - it depends on the person's music taste, the music he's listened to lately, the mood he is in, etc.. so it's all subjective imo.  :)

My suggestions would be:

- Angellore
- Beyond The Veil
- Tender Trip On Earth
- World Of Glass :)

It is really hard to pick just one! Tristania is such an incredible band with vast atmospheric diversity from album to album. So here are the songs, one per album, that I would recommend to a newbie (depending on which album he or she happens to obtain first):

Widow's Weeds: Evenfall (for a rich, evocative, mystical introduction to Tristania)
Beyond The Veil: Beyond The Veil (for a complex, musically challenging, layered introduction to Tristania)
World Of Glass: The Shining Path (for a dark, glorious, and intense introduction to Tristania)
Ashes: Equilibrium (for an accessible, fun, mainstream introduction to Tristania)
Illumination: Destination Departure (for a soft, lovely, and melancholy introduction to Tristania)

My first Tristania album was Ashes. If I could go back and change the order in which I listened to them, though, I really would like to have found them in sequential order. :-/

For a newbie Tristania fan, I think World Of Glass , Beyond The Veil and maybe something softer like Tender Trip On Earth or Selling Out would be great to introduce  :)

In order to get a good feel for the band, i think that a newbie should listen to A Sequel Of Decay. It has a bit of everything Tristania stands for in it. The violins, the choirs, Vibeke's amazing vocals, the clean voices by Osten, the harsh vocals, the dark theme and gothic atmosphere....
Plus, it's from the best characterizing Tristania album, Beyond The Veil!

Good one, although I could say the same about Selling Out. But the answer really depends on who the target is.

don't know, i think it has to be a Tristania representative song (from the WW-BTV-WOG era 'cause i like them more than the others)
maybe A Sequel Of Decay because it's aggressive sometimes, sad other times, relaxing sometimes, etc...

That's hard. The first one I heard was Year of the Rat hehe. I think one from each album 'cause they are all great and different.

WW: Midwintertears.
BtV: Opus Relinque.
WoG: Crushed Dreams.
Ashes: The Wretched.
Illumination: Down.
Rubicon: Protection.

There's a dramatic change between the third and fourth album, so I would just go by what kind of music that person already likes. Most people tend to like the early sound (WW, BtV, WoG) so... Angina, or Aphelion if they have more patience. If they're into rougher sounds, I would show them Midwintertears =) My friend really digged My Lost Lenore, and he's into pop, mainstream techno and whatnot.

I wonder how would be his face like if you show him Libre or Opus Relinque. Beetween WoG and Ashes there's a huge change, but it's bigger from pop to death/doom/symphonic/goth metal lol

The change from WoG to Ashes was weird for me at first. I listened to WW, BtV, and WoG...fell in love with all three albums...then bought Ashes. I was all  :o . I didn't know how to feel about it at first because it was so different. But eventually...I grew to love the album about as much as the others.

It was like a change from Gothic/Symphonic Metal to Doom (ish) Metal.

I kinda bought the albums diffrently.
First was Ashes then Illumination
And then the rest.

So I love Ashes and Illumination the most and have been listening to them the longest. But Now WoG is my favourite
