Epica
« on: 13 September 2005, 13:47:05 »

Epica are one of my favourite bands and the second metal band I got to know (after Nightwish). I don't knwo how well-knwon they are, so a little discription:

Epica was founded in 2003 (if I'm not wrong) by Marl Jansen (Ex-After Forever). They released two albums, The phantom Agony (2003) and Consign to Oblivion (spring 2005), combining Metal with film music and the mezzo-sopran voice of Simone Simmons and the occasional grunts of Mark Jansen. They also released The Score, a "score album" wihthout metal elements. I didn't buy it beacuse I'm not that fond of such things, but I have the two albums and the DVD "We will take you with us".

Questions? Opinions?

Well they are from my homecountry. I liked them in the past more then now. I don't like the new record, but maybe it is because I liked the contrasts between Mark and Simone.
That doesn't change the fact that they are grown a lot and the vocals are much better then in the past....but still I think they can do better like their debut 'The Phantom Agony.'

I like TpA very much, although it's not perfect. CtO lacks heaviness a bit, it sounds too poppy sometimes, and the mood is not as "dark" anymore. The DVD is just something for fans, but I wouldn't recommand it to people who are not that fond of Epica.

I understaind them a bit better now and have the dvd, but still.... I have the idea that there are some members in the band who wants to do something else also... I hear so many things but all half: but well that's the feeling I have when I see them now.

They just need time to get more a 'profile' from what they are and want to do.

I had the feeling that Mark wants in some way "save" the old After Forever"

I agree with Deadlocked here. I can't get into them as well, it's like Mark wants to create new AF and Simone seems to copy Floor IMO <_<... I really dislike this band....

i've heard Consign to Oblivion and it was a nice album but, as some of you, i can't seem to get into it properly. the album is ok, it has some good songs, but something's missing, something that makes it rather hollow. i also dislike the girl's voice.

CoT is "too nice" in some ways, I would bee better if there werde more guitars and less bombast, but I like it. TPA is much better, it has  wonderful amtosphere that gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it, of course it could also be herader; i like it the way it is.

to AF/Epica: I think these are bands that are rather differnet from each other, if you compare that with Tristania->Siernia or Blind Guardian->Savage Circus ( they almost sound the same).

Yea, I also think Nemesea is rather good.... Epica, however is not. I have given them several tries, but they just sound so shallow, like their music follows some patches to be ''as gothic as possible'' and nothing more. And I also dislike Simone's voice, everybody keep saying what a good soprano she is, and firstly she is a mezzo-soprano, and secondly she is not good. <_< I'm still sticking with AF....

It is good to see that there is more difference between Epica and AF. Mark is holding to his dream: to make epic, soundtrack, bombastisch music. AF is, especially with the new record, more metal: catchy and more raw.

Nemesea has a good vocalist, but the rest of the band miss the drive to put it all on a higher level. They are growing, so will see.

The production of Mana is bad... it's really pity... but if you change the settings of your audio player it's possible to give the sound more punch.. :)
