Leaves' Eyes
« on: 02 June 2005, 15:40:02 »

Leaves' Eyes, the new band of Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy) is really excellent and their brand new CD 'Vinland Saga' is symphonic gothic-metal of high level ! :D

Of course, the siren's voice is really impressive : for me, the 2d best female voice after Vibeke  :P  and do you know that Tarja, the Nightwish's singer, likes very well the way that Liv Kristine sings ?

But this magic voice is not all : the musicians that help Liv to realise his dreams are also excellent. It was also the case on 'Lovelorn', but 'Vinland Saga' is better !

It seems that Leaves' Eyes is also what should have been Theatre of Tragedy after 'Aegis' if TOT had not moved to a more electro-pop approach on the 2 last released albums. Leaves' Eyes is really more impressive than the albums Musik and Assembly.

You can also notice that we are still waiting for a new TOT album. They have a new female singer, Nell, who sings also in the band The Crest. If you listen to 'Letters from Fire", the album of The Crest, it's really different from Leaves' Eyes and I don't think that real TOT fans will forget Liv Kristine's voice : it's unique and Nell's voice is different (probably more adapted to a pop-gothic TOT)

One thing: do sort out the way you write the name of the band ;) cause it's wrong in the topic, then you start the text writing it right and then you just end up writing it wrong again! It's Leaves' Eyes. Don't get me wrong, just wanted you to notice the mistake.

I really like Lovelorn and can't wait for Vinland Saga.
And you know, that is not Liv Kristine's band. That is a band for itself and she is apart of it. Or else, she probably wouldn't have a record contract with her name on it and recording her second solo album.

Don't really think you can compare Liv Kristine with Vibeke Stene, they sing in totally diferent ways. And Liv Kristine has been around for so long now, more then 10 years!! When Tarja and Vibeke were still probably not even thinking of being in a band, Liv was already enchanting the world (this last part is an historical and chronological fact).  :P

And Theatre of Tragedy will surely release their new album pretty soon! And I can't wait for that one either! I had the opportunity to see them live with Nell singing and she really convinced me (what I thought would be difficult, seeing my admiration for Liv). That concert was really good! I'm not sure they're gonna continue that electronic path. We'll just have to wait and see.

I like Leaves Eyes too... especially live.. :)

But I won't call them outstanding or so...

I saw TOT too at their last tour... they were better than I thought... :)
The new songs sound more "organic"  ;) too imho.. in a quite calm way... i enjoyed them... :)

No problem, I've noticed actually the mistake after having posted my message, so I had (partially) edited the message, but it seems impossible to edit the topic, so I suppose that a moderator could do that ???

You will adore Vinland Saga, it's really like it is described in the interviews on the Leaves' Eyes site, more ambitious, conceptual and symphonic !

Yes, I know also the solo album of Liv Kristine, it's really different from her work with a band.

What I have suggested is simply the fact that Leaves' Eyes is the logic continuation of her work with TOT (3 first albums). Under this aspect, Liv Kristine is THE voice of an unique world, that is defined by the other members of the band in which she is the point of attraction.

Can you explain these 10 years ?
First album of TOT : 1995
First album of Nightwish : 1997
First album of Tristania : 1997

I'm not sure if it will be released very soon, I've just discovered that the second album of The Crest (Vain City Chronicles) has been released 2 weeks ago (I must find it ...), so, I suppose that The Crest will promote first his album by touring. Nell is in both bands ... (and I like what she does with The Crest, a kind of pop-gothic-metal).

I hope that TOT will come back to the Aegis approach, eventually with different accents. I can anyway imagine very well Nell's voice on Aegis songs, so, that's probably a good choice. For the rest, TOT could find another equilibrium between guitars and electronics, just like Paradise Lost on his two last albums.

Finally, we can like both Liv and Nell .... the best proof is that picture on the TOT site :

I meant from today! Not 10 years of difference between them or all the products/albums!

Tristania exists 10 years, but I thought Vibeke appeared just before the demo.

Anyway: I edited the topic. :)

Vinland Saga is even better than Lovelorn...Maybe you have to listen it more times than Lovelorn 'cause imo its more complex :)

I'll keep it short: I am a HUGE fan of Liv Kristine, therefore I was blissful when I found out she was making a new project. Leaves' Eyes has immediately become one of my fave bands, Lovelorn is an amazing album, and I just got Vinland Saga yesterday. Now, I'm in a stage when I keep repeating Farewell Proud Men, because this song struck me the most. :D

I'm not sure if I would compare Leaves Eyes "Lovelorn" as a return to Aegis but it was still a great album.  Nothing in my mind could ever recapture the undescribable beauty that was Aegis.   I have yet to hear Vinland Saga but I am quite confident once I do Liv Kristine and the guys in Atrocity will not disappoint!  :)

Live Kristine uses a very good singing technique, even if her voice sounds to fragile and sweet, but he learned a lot in last years and the vocals on "Farewell Proud Men" and "Solemn Sea" prove that.

Just one ponit for criticism: I expected a good produced making of and good interview with the band - and what we get?
The making of is too short and you can hardly see something that matters.
The Interview shows the most of the time Liv Kristine walking in snow. Ok, that's nice, but to hear more from her than several short phrases would fit to the intreview much more, maybe also some other band members should appear...

I actually didn't think I would say something like this, but....
Was just listening again (for the first time today, had listen to it some times yesterday) to 'Farewell Proud Men" and the beginning of the song, until Liv sings, that could be apart of a song from Within Temptation's "The Silent Force". The guitars sound the same, the chorus.... oh well....

I don't like Liv's voice much. It bores me to death after 15 minutes of listening it. But the lyrics and the music is good...Actually, nothing special. I like voice of her sister better. :)

Of course, everyone has the right to their own opinion, but I just have to ask this: have you ever seen Midnattsol live?

I did in WGT and Carmen's voice live just sucked!!! I like to hear it on the album, but definetely not live! The instrumental part of the music is quite good and she had presence live, but the voice.... not good enough.
Maybe it was a bad day... I'll probably see them again, just to see the evolution.

I love Leaves' Eyes!  I was kind of surprised that I liked them so much because Liv's voice is very sweet most of the time and almost airy, but there's just a strong allure that they have.  I'm really digging Vinland Saga!  It took a while to get used to, but I love it.  My favourite song on that album is "Twilight Sun"!  That extra song "Heal" is pretty good too.  :)

As for Midnattsol, I thought I'd like them just because it is Liv's sister, but I found that I didn't.  Musically they're awesome, I just didn't quite like Carmen's voice.  Maybe I was expecting a voice like Liv's, but... I dunno.  Not for me.

I'm just pleased that we have such great bands making wonderful music! After being into metal since 1986, the last 7/8 years have been an absolute joy with all these new bands starting - and seeing some of them here in the UK!! A big Hailz to Liv Kristine for the last 10 years and I hope Leaves' Eyes continues to do well.
