Not bad, but as expected it sounds like Morten  :P

It's like the most recent Dimmu Borgir album: every song is ''the'' followed by something ''deep''  ;D

The music sounds like post-AEFE Sirenia, but with Morten singing instead of Monika or Ailyn, it sounds much more unique and interesting. And yeah, I don't understand why this isn't a Sirenia release, unless it's legal issues.

So I guess it's coming this March?

Perhaps it's hard to return to this sound after creating two records sounding like a heavier version of Evanescence (no offense to Evanescence). Imagine Therion wanting to create early 90's death metal again.

Another sample uploaded online, you can hear The One I Once Was on Mortemia's Myspace.

Have to say this song is even too-sirenian for me to adore like pure gold, I hope the rest of the album is more in the style of ''The New Desire''.  Well, if not else, the growls and choirs are back, which I adore so much, plus the classical elements and I gotta say I don't miss the female vocals at all. They're more of a fashion statement nowadays than the actual contribution to music.

i do wonder if female vocals are featured in any of the songs. and i also wonder if his lyrics got any better. the lyrics in sirenia songs are very repetitive. i hope the lyrics will make sense this time.

No female vocals whatsoever.

Taken from Napalm Records:

Quote
The vocal concept in MORTEMIA is based on an interaction between Morten’s extreme vocals and the choir’s dramatic rendition. The interaction between the vocals adds diversity and dynamics to the songs. Morten chose not to include female lead vocals this time to more easily set MORTEMIA apart from his other bands, as well as to differentiate MORTEMIA from the many female-fronted gothic metal bands presently overrunning the scene.

I think that's super sweet, cause for my taste Sirens Of The Seven Seas is one of the most epic, powerful, enchanting and overall mega awesome songs Morten has done with Sirenia and it has Ailyn's vocals reduced as much as possible.

Gah, this sounds so much like Sirenia it's almost annoying.

Almost.

Feel free to add me, but please say you are from The Illuminated first.

Oh, srsly, why this song. What is the bands nowadays, noone seems to have the feeling which of their songs from upcoming albums are good and they usually present themselves with the worst possible (like Pussy from Rammstein's Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da). The New Desire would be such a better choice. St00pid Morten.  >:(

I agree, this song has a very predictable structure and it sounds so much like one of the first songs from 'Nine Destinines and a Downfall'

I suppose because it wouldn't be too smart to hype the album with their best song(s). Then, come release day, everyone finds out the rest of the album sounds sub-par. So, it's best not to set the bar too high. Either that, or the record company demands something more catchy and radio-friendly. I'm sure the artists know what songs of theirs sound better than others (Well, within the scope of a single album...They're pretty much clueless about what albums are superior in a discographic scope), but it's good to find the right balance for the sake of good promotion.

It was a rethorical question. I'm very well aware of the puppet strings the record companies are holding.  ::)

Best song, worst song - actually doesn't even matter, but everyone should have a tendency towars picking the most representative song. If The One I Once Was is for Mortemia well.... I'll buy the album anyway and have The New Desire on repeat I guess.  ::)

Hey, tnx for the link 9999. The previews sound very nice, harder than Sirenia, lots of growls and epic choirs, me likes. But then on the other hands, they're too short to base an opinion of the whole album, so I guess we'll have to wait a bit more....  ::)

All songs under 6mins... all the songs have the same ''sounds'' to. To be brutally honest: this sounds like Sirenia, but with a choir/growl interaction, instead of a female lead. I fail to see how this match the hype like ''the sound of Beyond the Veil'' and ''a new musical concept''.

Well, hello there :)
I just have seen(or saw?) new video for song "The once I was". Very nice thing. I'm starting to believe that Morten is member of some dark secret forbiden cult ... or something like that :P
What do you think?

So, the official video has been released and here it is. Gotta say I love the video more than a song, and Morten looks totally hawt in it  ::) Finally a video with some story, not just seeing band playing around. And very aestethical too.
