Personally I think they are highly overrated. Thanks to an ex-gf I have some mp3's of them and 9 out of 10 times it's: *skip*. Tarja voice bores me (their aquisition of that singing bassist is a good move to make the songs less lullabyish).

I really like powermetal, but not with a voice which makes me sleepy.

I don't listen to Nightwish as much I used to, but I likeem a lot. Their new album is fantastic, although there are some boring tracks, most of them are good and a few of their songs are just mindblowing like Ghost Love Score. I just love the coirs, but I don't like so much the new Tarja's singing style. I miss the more operatic vocals. The best album is Once, the most magical is Oceanborn, the worst of threirs is Century Child.

I happen to agree.  Not a bad band, but there are way better power metal bands out there.  If I want power metal, I'd definitely choose Symphony X, Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody, even Stratovarius over Nightwish.  And Tarja?  Eh... sometimes yea, more often than not nay.  I guess the thing that raises my eyebrow most with them is that they try to sound serious in a genre that really isn't meant to be taken seriously.  Hence why most power metal bands write fantasy concept albums.  But that's just me... although one thing I must disagree with Tjeerd on... Marco's voice?  Hmm... okay he sounds good sometimes... but not enough!

Did I say he sings well? ;)

I only said that with the male vocals the songs are more diverse.

They're alright but they don't impact me very much, they have a few good songs but I wouldn't buy one of their albums.I've heard people comparing them to Tristania and saying stuff like Tristania is a cheap rip off of Nightwish and all that.In Nightwish, the vocals, effects and music is just...retarded most of the times.I can't se how people can be comparing Tristania to stuff like Nightwish.

I could never understand these comparisons either.  You're comparing a power metal band to a black/death/doom-influenced one.  Might as well be comparing Manowar to Darkthrone. That being said, I must say I feel that Tristania represents a higher level of musicianship than Nightwish.

In my opinion Nightwish is a very good band (one of my very favourite bands) and I enjoy listening to it Very much. Tough Tarja's vocals dont stand a chance with Vibeke ;) (this is only my personal opinion :) )

And Nightwish - I really like them too... Last week they were in Austria - really great show... :)
My favourite Album is still Oceanborn, but I like all of them...

Even If I don't like Marcos voice on disc that much, but live he was fantastic... :)

I  already stated my opinion about Nightwish in some other thread. Well, I like one or two songs, but I agree with Tjeerd that Tarja's voice is at times( not to say all the time) kind of irritating. Again it's the way I feel it, i don't want to insult somebody, who "adores" them. After all that's the purpose of forums ;)
Another thing that maybe prevents me from liking them is the fact I'm not quite into power metal and this constant labelling of Nightwish as a gothic band seems ridiculous to me. They may have some gothic touches, but the female vocals do not make a gothic band.
One reason they are so much welcome everywhere is probably that they were innovative, because you don't usually expect to hear female vocals on power symphonic background

Angels Fall First is my favorite Nightwish album, I think they are great, and Tarja? Love her singing. I can take Nightwish aLOT easier than most power metal bands. Aren't Symphony X more progressive metal anyway? I think Wishmaster is Nightwish's worst album.

Yeah, but powermetal and prograssive metal quite blend I think. Altough there are few singers n those genres as diverse as Russel Allen.

first of all,i have to say that yu cannot, just CANNOT compare TWO DIFFERENT STYLES OF VOICE.Traja sings on classical, opera way and Vibek sings with her natural voice! And besides that,Tarja is studying classical singing on university in Karlsruhe!
second of all,it's not okay to compare ALSO two different bands that have different genres! Tristania is the best in gothic metal,in my opinion and Nightwish is the best in their genre - symphonic metal.
Nightwish is my favorite band, besides of many, but it's still sharing it's place with tristania. I listen to them for a long long time, since 1998 and i really really love them...IMHO opinion, wishmaster is the best album (and i cannot imagine how someone can say it sucks!) - it's funny how it's so clearly how tarja's vocie is changing with every album - from good to better then to the best - although,i don't like it on once so much....
someone heard the forever moments?

that's from me :)
