Not a fan of all of their work.. Nevertheless Mandylion is amazing, and besides that I love the song Nighttime Birds, I've listened to it sooooo many times  :D

video to new song Heroes for Ghosts! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m-zhD8Qh9w

i like this song a lot. it's very much in the veins of The West Pole but i hear something close to Home and Souvenirs... perhaps it's due to silje's interpretation that could easily seem anneke here! she's getting better and better and i loved her so much even with octavia sperati - which i hope will be resumed sooner or later.
Great music!

Needless to say, here's the brand new convert. :) I got their first 4 albums and MOST of this music sounds great. This new song is proof positive that over the years, the band hasn't lost it (I'm yet to get the records from How to Measure a Planet and up to The West Pole).

Their new album is going to feauture loads of synths and more experimental stuff as far as I know.

I'm not that much into The Gathering's latest albums, but I will definitely check them out later ;) I'm just enjoying their Anneke period right now 8)

Meltdown and Gemini I are great, but I haven't listened to the whole album yet...

The new album kicks ass pretty hard, with I Can See Four Miles / Heroes for Ghosts / Meltdown being the obvious highlights. I have one question: who is singing the male parts in Meltdown? Guess it's Rene Rutten but I could be mistaken.

The whole band does backing vocals, so it can be any of them. I'm still getting used to this new 'electro-pop' trip-rock, but I kinda like it so far. Heroes for Ghosts is truly amazing!

Disclosure is IMHO such a great ''comeback'' from the band. Let's face it, with Anneke's departure we were in for changes, even though I have found Silje amazing since The West Pole, but that album as a whole just didn't feel right for me. It was too bare, too mellow, I've felt like it didn't have any edge and that particular The Gathering touch that kept me loving this band all these years. But Disclosure is a brand new story, I find it so refreshing, amazing, atmospheric; it combines the innovative sound of Mandylion and creativeness of If_Then_Else, epicness of Black Light Distric, edge of Nighttime Birds and ambient of How To Measure A Planet? in one. It's like the band continued where they have left with Souvenirs (because Home is probably my least favourite album with Anneke) and again added something new.

It's why I like The Gathering so much, they have this red line in their music style that is just theirs, but they keep surprising me in going on and evolving and never go too far. I love Disclouse, especially I Can See Four Miles, that is such an amazing song.

Yes, but there's a male lead vocal line, the only one on the album, and no guest singers have been listed this time around. So I was curious.

I felt pretty much the same; there were a few songs I liked on The West Pole (A Constant Run, Pale Traces, Capital of Nowhere) but that record failed to "grab" me as a whole.

I've just got if_then_else but was only able to give it one cursory listen thus far. Home and Souvenirs (as well as the live albums and the Downfall compilation) are somewhere down the acquisition pipeline. :)

BTW, Travel is the one song that I'm currently hung on. The sound and the vocals get so broadly epic towards the end that resistance is utterly futile. :D I love the soaring vocals like the ones found early in the 8th minute of the song, and the music that goes alongside them is magnificient (keyboards / orchestration mostly).

It's Frank.  The clue is that in the booklet it's listed
Frank Boeijen - keyboards, (backing) vocals
Anyway, this interview talks about it

Thanks for the information. I thought they were all credited with backing vocals so I was not sure who does the lead.
Interesting to know that Silje became a mother lately; probably that was the reason why the three male members took the time off to hang out with the other members of the original lineup. Before I knew of Silje's circumstances I was slightly confused as to why there are two lineups of The Gathering around and how the female part of the band was taking it (it sure felt to me like the KISS original reunion that killed the "Carnival of Souls" lineup somewhat).
Then again, now that I know, seems that Silje looks visibly pregnant in some of the promo shots. :)
