Trail of Tears
« on: 04 March 2005, 19:47:47 »

The new Trail of Tears album, "Free Fall Into Fear" is finally released !

As this is the first TOT album without female singer, it asks some time to 'accept' the new TOT universe : actually, it is in the prolongement of "A New Dimension Of Might", but with less melodic passages and more extremes sound/vocals assaults in a still more dark and frightening world.

Probably, "A New Dimension Of Might" will remain the best album with a female singer, paradoxically because it was opening the way to "Free Fall Into Fear", an album where TOT seems by moments to flirting with Cradle of Filth and exposes a more direct sound, although the construction of the songs is still very complex, using with skill and talent the electronical resources to define better a sound full of fear ....

Interesting to see that TOT has decided that a music that corresponds more to his original goal doesn't need a female singer. A more radical choice than Tristania (where Vibeke remains, but shares the vocals with 2 male singers), that's the TOT choice, and after some listenings, it seems coherent and acceptable. Probably a new source of discussion ?

I haven't heard the new album yet. But when I saw them on tour with Tristania and Therion I didn't like their new style without the female vocalist. However, I enjoy their first two albums.

If I good understand, you didn't like too much "A New Dimension in Might", because Helena Iren Michaelsen was replaced by another female singer.

Is is true that the 3rd album is the beginning of the mutation of TOT into a more radical style.

As you prefer the two first albums, I recommend you Imperia, the new band of Helena and the album 'The Ancient Dance of Qetesh". It's original (Egyptian influences in gothic-metal !)

Yeah, I bought ANDIM, but I only listened to it a couple of times because I was disappointed. Maybe I should give it another shot. My musical taste seems to change from time to time.

Thanks the tip. I haven't heard any music from Imperia.

You mean there's actually people that LIKED Helena?  I thought she was what dragged Profoundemonium down.  I like ANDOM much better simply because her god-awful voice isn't plaguing it.  Although I kinda like Ronny's voices on Prof. more.  Both have their good points, but I'm anxious to hear the new one.  TOT does the aggression thing real well.

Yes, I like most of her voice, though it can be annoying at times. I also like the samples on the Imperia site.

I agree, Her voice made listening to "Disclosure In Red" and "Profoundemonium" almost painful for me!

As for "Free Fall Into Fear" I love it! Haven`t stopped playing it for the past fortnight and to be honest I like TOT without female vocals, Ronny and Kjetil did a better job then either Helena or Catherine,

I liked and still like Helena Iren Michalsen's voice. A lot. She is a tremendous singer, and I think Imperia is a great band.

About Trail of Tears, I haven't heard their new alnum yet and I hope I'll soon get the opportunity for that, because I think they're an amazing band!! A New Dimension of Might is my favourite album by them so far, but also Profoundemonium and Disclosure in Red are awesome. From Free Fall Into Fear I only know Carrier of The Burden of Life and I think it's one of the best Trail songs I have ever heard.... but I do miss Cathrine Paulsen....  :(

Hm, I think A New Dimension of Might is a pretty decent album.
Haven't heard the new one. It's interesting how it sounds without female vocals

Profoundemonium is my favorite thus far.  Have only heard a few samples from Free Fall and they were quite impressive. Hopefully the rest of the album is as intense. Haven't been able to find many users with it either.

I completely agree with this. All TOT albums have their charm and their own personality, they are all great, including Free Fall Into Fear, but after many listenings of this last opus, I prefer definitely A New Dimension In Might, because it's more diversified and includes the divine voice of Cathrine Paulsen  :D

By the way, does somebody know what Cathrine is now doing ? Will she come back with another band ???

Just got FFIF today... it's definitely a different approach, much more percussion-driven.  The songs are a lot shorter, but pack a heavy punch.  I like!

^I didn't know they had been playing Eradicate :o thanks!

Does anybody know why did they sign with Massacre Records? I definitely LOVE Napalm Records and I don't see why changing label since it's easily the best one among Gothic Metal bands (Draconian, Tristania, etc singed with them).

The song seems good to me, but I'll wait to see the more layered version on the record I guess ;)

Hm, I don't think Napalm Records is a good label...I prefered when Tristania was in SPV Records. All the gothic bands from NR are too simlilar for me, even the image, photosessions, videos...

I think you've got a point there, but I feel like Napalm is a very supportive label to bands for developing their music. For example they supported Tristania with both Beyond the Veil and World of Glass and then again with Rubicon which was completely different, Trail of Tears with both Profoundemonium and A New Dimension of Might, etc.

I didn't like the fact that SPV released so many editions for Ashes and Illumination, it was really hard for me to get the limited edition for Illumination (with In the Wake) and the slip-case release of Ashes, while Napalm just releases a sort of limited digipack and a standard jewel case.

I think its nice that Napalm has so many good Gothic Metal bands because when I'm in the mood of that type of metal I just look at their catalogue haha, at the moment I can remember 7 bands from that label that I listen to. Also they have good distribution over here compared to other labels (The End Records, Season or Mist or Massacre Records for example).
