I have been a "fan" of Tristania ever Widows weed and I really love this album. But on thing really pisses me off. With music this good, why fuck up the recording so much. The sound engineer/mixer or whoever did it I don't care but I really loves his loudness the whole album just keeps blasting at you even at the quieter bits. I have a better then average audio set so I may be more biased but the guitar bit on The Ravens is so horrible compressed and here when Vibeke sing in the quiet parts it is all boosted. Please leave some dynamics on the CD and don't give into the loudness war.

I think people need to learn how to adjust to a new sound.

I am a huge Tristania fan and Illumination is pretty much worthless to me because it was overproduced. It is very difficult to listen to, unless played on certain sound systems.

It's not the sound, but a cancerous plague in the music industries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war

Actually I listened to it for that, in one place the toms kind of "pop" and in a lot of places the high end "craps out", particularly the high hats, cymbals and the sibilants in the singing, but it's no way as bad as it would seem from the earlier posts, and it's properly eq'ed, there isn't too much high end. I don't think it is overcompressed, or at least not that much overcompressed.

Not overcompressed? Try running one of the tracks through a sound editor, it's as overcompressed as you could possibly make it without cutting away high pitches entirely. When will producers and musicians learn that you're robbing people of a good experience with your music when you give into the loudness war. I DO own a remote control. I'm also, and I hate to say this, one of the unlucky people who owns a +100.000 $ stereo where every damn little detail is revealed. When you're deforming a CD as badly as it's the case here it just becomes an addition to the garbage bin. Reducing sound quality on a CD to something that might resemble mp3 quality can't be a damn wise move anymore. People that's going for music like Tristania will buy it even if it doesn't overshadow the 2 minute wonders in the pop world that's blasting out severely oversampled and cropped music at extreme volume compared to the db it's been set at. I've had this CD for quite a while now, the music is good but unlistenable to a degree where I can count the times it's been in my CD drive on one hand. Last Tristania buy untill they or their record label gets a bit wiser.

I listened the album again after a long time (due to those stupid promo's i need to listen hehe) And I realy like the dreamy atmosphere mixed with the heavy parts..
'The ravens' is special because of Samael (i like his voice here) and of course 'Destination Departure' because it is soooo fragile, thin and naked (many compliments to put all those emotions in the song) but I don't want to forget 'Sacrilige' with such a great drum sound and complexity.. hihi I like it all ;-)

I agree (mostly) I prefer the mastering and EQing or in short, the sound, of ashes. really. But I just played a little with the equalizer of Foobar. It just amplifies or deamplifies certain frequencies(bass mid tones and treble). The result is a calmer sound (sounds redicilous on ashes) and more accentuated drums. There was one victim to this cranking up i can't rehearse. It's the ravens. a pity, it still clips you the hell out.
If you use foobar just enter these numbers into a text editor and save it as a .feq file. Then add the eq into the DSPs and configure it. then just open the file.
So here it is: -2 -2 -3 -5 -6 -7 -8 -9 -9 -9 -9 -7 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0
This was setting one The next is setting two and even more "aggressive": 0 -2 -3 -4 -6 -6 -6 -6 -7 -7 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0

Thanks for the foobar settings. Ashes sounded so good, whoever produced it is a champion.

What about World of Glass? I really love its production. Whoever did it had to manage a lot of elements, including three vocalists and a choir. They did so beautifully.

hmm, the only thing you can do is: run a clip restauration filter over an original Cd-rip. that might help a little....
