No, I don't think it sounds much like Ashes at all. And if your comments were refering to Vibeke's vocals on Illumination, I'd have to disagree with you whole heartedly! It is definitely one of her best and most emotional vocal performances ever!!  Or maybe you just have very very different taste and prefer girls with thin or poppy vocals .....which I could probably understand

On the other hand, It's nice to know that there are at least some Morten fans appreciate Illuminatiion!  :lol:Tongue

Vocals are always personal taste and it all depends on what you call "poppy" vocals! The only thing I know is that the new singer of Sirenia sounds much better than Vibeke.

The only thing I think Illumination beats NDAAD is Vibeke and Osten by a mile. They are both amazing singers. Too bad most of the music behind the vocals sound like crap.

I miss the grunting :-(((
And the grunting which I can hear on this album really sucks...even Morten was much better, not mentioning Kjetil...
Whole CD seems to me like one big step towards mainstream (when the hell you've heard CHORUSES on Tristania albums???), but it'll take some (many) more listenings before I'll reveal my final verdict.

(My english sucks)

hmmm well i gave this album a couple of spins (illegal spins hihi) and i'm not sure how to pronounce myself: either satisfied or a bit disappointed. nonetheless it's a very good new album! i can't find any similarities to Ashes or to the other albums and i love the fact that they added gothic rock guitars! it's definitely going to be a gothic metal hit of this year because it's catchy, fresh and interesting. the songs i found amazing are Sanguine Sky, The Ravens, Mercyside (very gothic rock orientated guitars, me likes) and Lotus. the ballads are also very soft and touching. i also miss the grunts but i find those present to be quite good! i still miss Kjetil's though, although he only sang on Ashes. i'm so glad to see Vibeke singing her lungs out on this album! i've been waiting for a long time to hear her sing this much on an album! a voice like hers must be taken advantage of. Osten's vocals are also very good. i was surprised and frankly terrified to hear from a fan that his vocals have got an electronic 'ToT's Raymond' feel to them but i'm relieved to see it was a lie. his vocals aren't as deep as usual but they still stand out as one of the best vocals i've heard. over all this is an amazing album which i hope will be the closest to mainstream for Tristania.

ps: in my opinion choruses were an uninspired idea...

Choruses were good for 1-2 albums, then it's time to move on. In an age where most bands last for 2-3 albums, trying new things is a must.

Boneman: I understood you. Smiley

Every album this far had songs with choruses (often the songs where the title was mentioned in the lyrics), so what's the difference?

I can't agree more!
When I first heard the album, my major fear was "Is Tristania going mainstream?" I missed the growls so much.... but after a few spins, I got to really enjoy this album and knowing this band, I can sort of predict that they won't be stuck to this style for long. Besides, it's nice to have a lightly more straight forward Tristanian flavored goth rock album once in a while. We might as well enjoy it while we can.

On the next ones, Anders will be doing the extreme vocals, which should be interesting to hear.  Wink

Hi

Me also thinks that Tristania makes their way to more classical song structures from album to album. The classical song structure is not really bad - but I have expectations to Tristania who always where (alon with Moonspell) my favorite band.

But I do really miss the thing that Tristania made so different and special. The singing - specifically Vibekes part is much less interesting now .. (Don't want to say that she can't sing anymore, that is not the point) .. it's more general style, I miss her weeping and mourning she showed in her part on Widow's Weeds and Beyond the Veil.
Also, the grunts *do* miss - it also made the music so special. Perhaps it is, because for me Gothic Metal must not lack of grunts..

I also miss songs which made ashes nice to me -- like the bonus track bird or endogenisis - those where greate .. not least due to the great grunting.

Well..

Yeah, that's exactly what's on my mind (except Moonspell).

Yep, but you can't expect them to always sound the same. Same goes for Vibeke's singing, you can't expect her to always play a supportive (although very special) role. Ok, her weeping, chanting and mourning was what made WW & BTV so special in the first place, but that doesn't mean she should be limited to these roles. I mean, she's an amazing singer; it's nice to see that she's given more opportunities to shine on one of the Tristania albums. And on Illumination, esp, Deadlands she's just amazing!

Once in a while, releasing a different kind of album is a good thing, it shows how versatile this band is. I really don't believe they are going to stick with this style for long (as their discography has already proven this point).  I don't see there is anything to complain about. Why not give them the chances to show us what they can do, instead of complaining what they didn’t do?

If you expect this album to sound like WW, BTV or even Ashes, you'd be disappointed ( like I did at first). If you keep and open mind (forget this is the Tristania you know) and just let the feelings and atmosphere guide you, you'd find it surprisingly rewarding.   Overall, I think Illumination is an excellent album. I have just given it another listen and I love it!
