What do you call Vibeke's role in Angina then?

well choruses did appear on former albums, of course, but one thing that made Tristania a huge favourite of mine was the insane song structure. see Opus Relinque. if you hear this song for the very first time you get lots of surprises, you get lots of parts you wouldn't have expected. same goes for lots of other songs. i know choruses were there before but i just feel the song structure they're using on this album makes them a little predictable, which they certainly were not. still i managed to ignore this aspect after a few more spins. i've totally changed my mind. i've definitely crossed the "disappointed" part. it's grown on me so much. it's got such an amazing atmosphere. it creates such wonderful soundscapes, it's just that type of album that you can listen to when you're sick of it all. it gets everything out. Destination Departure has become a very personal song in just three days. so the final opinion is: amazing! it's not an A+ but definitely close to an A. i'm hooked.

@blackwinged... i must disagree with you on the singing matter. i think Vibeke's performance on this album is one of the best! the same goes for World of Glass. frankly i don't understand why you miss her singing from Beyond the Veil since it's hardly there. she sings mostly along the choirs, rarely by herself, which doesn't give her much advantage. on Widow's Weeds she sang on most songs operetically which has kind of gotten too old too fast. operetic vocals are starting to get boring imo. i love the fact that she experiments her singing style, at times haunting, at times tranquil and at times classical, operetic. that is what gives Tristania salt and pepper. not to mention the combo she and Osten form.

So because the band are using an A B A format, or similar variant (ABACA) you dislike this album?
Many of their previous songs use it too. Taking the aforementioned Angina - A B A A1 C or Heretique A B A1 B A A2. There are songs, like you mentioned (Opus Relinque) which has a more varied song structure - A B A B1 C A2 D E A3, it doesnt make their new stuff any less interesting.
Anyway my point being the use of the word "chorus" was entirely misleading for the argument.

Exactly  :D

@Zeraphine & Errant Soul

In regards to the choruses, I'm not going to join the discussion. However I also think the song structures on Illumination are more straight forward (in other words, less complex) than any previous albums. This is understandable, since they have chosen a more goth rock style this time. The songs are therefore become more catchy.

To me, this is like drawing, a loose style drawing is not necessarily inferior (although it seems less technical & less complex), it can be more lively than a tight style drawing, but you'd have to sacrifice the Details. ;)

I totally agree with you ychi4100. With Ashes, much of the complexity of the songs was lost, it was a "pared down" album. Illumination cant be that much of a surprise in that aspect.

regarding the choruses: don't misunderstand me, please! i do like this album, heck i love it! i simply would have prefered that surprise factor they used to have. this doesn't mean the album is not good, on the contrary, it's extremely pleasant to listen to.

I've listened to the album and frankly i love it!
Its not as catchy as people claim it to be. Its catchier than previous albums definetly, but a regular lets say "evanscence" fan wont be completely drawn to this album unless they have some level of IQ, sadly enough evanescence and IQ dont mix togetehr, anyway before i turn this into bash amy-lee
the album is quite good, not so complex, not so heavy, but Tristania made a new forumla nad it works magically, Vibeke and Osten deliver vocals which are just purely amazing, I prefered Osten since I always found him a bit underappreciated but in songs like Fate, The Ravens, The End of Open ground he shows amazing potential; Fate is my fav song of hte album so far. As for vibeke this is probably her most solid performance yet, her vocals are more varied, more unique and much better than on ashes.
As for the whole mood of the album I can say its more of a doomy album than gothic rock, am quite sure it cant be considered rock, look at the style of lacrimas profundere whom are gothic rock and compare them to tristania no similarities. And there are some great musical sections that make you want to repeat the song over and over again
I Like the approaches major bands are heading, My Dying Bride didn't have any growls on thier new album, although I love to hear Aron growl his lungs out, but the music is amazing, emotional and addictive. And so is Illumination :)

Come on, you can`t have missed the one and only growl within the song "And I Walk With Them"

Illumination is definitely the most "pop" album of Tristania so far. The first time i listened to it, my mind went directly to some Liv Kristine and Theatre of Tragedy performances. The album is just different from all the other Tristania releases, but fans who expected it to sound like "before" will just have to please themselves by listening to the old albums...After all, variety should be the spice of life...Being different does not necessarily mean that they`re going mainstream.

I wonder if anyone heard the bonus track, In The Wake that will be released togehter with the official release of Illumination...

I'ma fuck some ants here (I don't care it's not an existing expression in English), but there is some growling on "A Line of Deathless Kings", on the track "The Blood, the Wine, the Roses", in the end. And in my honest opinion, it all but ruined an otherwise fantastic song.

As for the abscence of extreme vocals on Illumination, I don't care. Theatre of Tragedy eventually dropped them too, and I thought it made the band sound more mature. I haven't heard Illumination yet (can't wait), but I suppose it'll cause the same sensation I felt when I first listened to "Ashes": I don't know where the hell this band is heading, but I must admit I like it. Even though I'll probably miss the extreme vocals.

By the way, let's bash Amy Lee anyway, I think "The Open Door" sucks major ass in comparison to "Fallen", but that's just my opinion.

I don't mind the changes on Illumination but I'd hate to see Tristania dropping the growls completely on their future albums. Once in a while is fine ;)

You can't love Tristania without loving the growls. ;)  I'm looking forward to hearing Anders' vocals on their next albums.

I like new album very much! I haven't found my favourite song yet, but Vibekes's voice sounds gorgeous in all the things!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's nice that they don't stay the same. Each album is perfect in its unique way.

Yeah, I agree the part in which you feel dissapointed.
When I heard by the first time "Illumination" I was like "OMG! What is this?" but then I listen, and listen and listen the album and now I'm totally in love with it.
About Vibeke's vocals, I think she did a great job, one of her best performances.

Cheers!
