8,9/10 German, loves that Tristania always did their own thing, whatever was "in" to that time, says that it needs some time to reach the full beauty of the album

http://www.metalfan.nl/reviews.php?id=3289 <- good indepth-review: 88/100

http://www.zwaremetalen.com/recensie/7490/Tristania-Illumination.html <- This is an odd one, the review is quite positive, but the score is 65/100, several people are expressing their doubts on that score in the comments (and of course, there's a 'old-schooler' in the comments who doesn't like Tristania's current sound).
I do not represent the band.

I also agree. Illumination is fantastic! Perfect!

This album brings a natural evolution for Tristania, mainly in the vocal ones: Řsten and Vibeke form a perfect couple!

A great Spanish review, (they give Illumination 8/10, and it's done by a friend of mine ;D ):

I don't think this review has been posted yet, it's from the British magazine Kerrang (they are pretty harsh with Illumination IMO, personally I think it's a great album). Here is the review: ;D

"Norwegian symphonic goth metallers miss the point" (2 stars/K out of 5)
Impressing many on their 2005 tour with Nightwish, Norway's Tristania were in the perfect position to jump their career into hyperspace. New album "Illumination" continues their melodramatic, metal-rooted style and maintains the light and shade female/male vocals. All the same, it's an album miserable enough to deter all but the hardest of goth ears. The real killer, though, is that the material's not much good. It doesn't matter if you're punk or technical metal - if your songs aren't working, your album won't. "Lotus" and "Sanguine Sky" succeed in bringing out their best, but it's maudlin and tuneless elsewhere and definetely not the album Tristania needed to make."
Download: "Mercyside".
For fans of: Type O Negative, Lacuna Coil.

Read the review in Oor (I guess the most-read dutch music magazine) and summarized: While Ashes was a refreshing album, this one is playing safe.

Revolver magazine (U.S.) - April 2007 issue

"Tristania might hail from Norway, but don't expect to see them burning down churches anytime soon. Far from the blast-beated blasphemy of their most notorius countrymen, this gothic-minded septet's latest is a mellow ride. 'Illumination' retains the band's signature male-female vocal trade-off style but downplays Osten Bergoy's dark baritone and the Nazgul-like rasp of Samael's Vorph (subbing for the departed Kjetil Ingebrethsen) in favor of the operatic keening of frontwoman Vibeke Stene. The result is a series of trudging, maudlin meditations that, despite a few horns-throwing numbers like the double-kicking 'Sacrilege', sounds mostly like Enya fronting Pink Floyd." Lucas Aykroyd

He also gave the album 2 and a half stars out of a 5 star rating.

New review from Crypt'O Goth (a French magazine).
Here is my translation of the article:

"Tristania
Illumination
Gothic Metal
SPV/Replica
Available in stores
[They give the album the grade of] 3,5/5 (btw they give 4,5/5 to NDAD by Sirenia and compare Monika to Vibeke ::))

As usual, Tristania gives to their fans what they want meaning some Tristania. The melodies are beautiful and the voice is still perfect but for me there is a little something missing that would make the difference. Too bad. You'll have to notice the presence of Vorph (Samael) who came to make a little apparition."
They also five the single "Sanguine Sky" a grade of 3,5/5

Hope my translation is not too bad. :P

I love Illumination. I don't kunderstand those guys who miss the grunts. I also love the grunts but Illumination is a different cd. Hear well every song, and you will understand: grunts are very unnecesary. Vibeke and Osten can do it alone. Is music for the soul.

Mercyside is a good song to open the album, but it is not the best of the cd. Vibeke sings so sexy  :P

Sanguine Sky is good because Osten sings perfect. And I love Hermank lyrics.

Open Ground is the best because of the story behind the lyrics. Also the sudden end is beautiful.

The Ravens is very spiritual, and I love Vibeke when she sings "Til Jord Ska Bi Bli" ----> Sexyyy again  :P

Destination Departure has wonderful lyrics, and Osten scares me with his voice. He is a beast, I cannot believe that could be a man in this world with a voice as deep as Osten's. Words are not enough.

Down is so funny, a very cool song to dance  ;D

Fate is the best besides Open Ground. So sad the story. Beautiful Osten. And Vibeke's parts are beautiful too.

Lotus is a good song but I prefer to not hear it.

Sacrilege is another of the best, personally I think that is so nice see these change in Osten's voice, is like an acting (do you understand?). It's like he's singing out of control. Awesome. The music is also fantastic.

In The Wake scares me. Pretty but not the best.

Ab Initio gets interesting at the end, when Vibeke Sings "You ould go anywhere". But is not better than In The Wake for me.

Deadlands is a very professional song, is the only song where vibeke summons all her voices and makes just one. Pretty. Beautiful lyrics.

for me...illumination is THE BEST!!!!!!!! 10/10... or maybe 9/10

Cheers.
