My Review Of Illumination
« on: 03 April 2011, 07:11:55 »

After releasing four very amazing and distinguishing albums, Tristania releases Illumination. I must say that this is definitely Tristania's weakest album to date. That does not mean it's horrible. In fact, there are some things I love about it. But it pales in comparison to the other things that this band releases. Alot of the songs lack the drive and epic feel that are present in the other albums, leaving some of them somewhat bland, the death growls are almost all gone, (they're not very present on Rubicon either, but Rubicon worked better with it than this album did), and the overall feel of the album just seems to be lacking. With that said, I must say that Vibeke's vocal performance does not wane in the least. She sounds as beautiful and divine as ever and Osten sounds great as well. They're probably the only ones that save the album from complete mediocrity. The lyrics are pretty good as well, but not as good as the previous albums...overall leaving a good album...but it's...just another gothic rock album. Not something from the epic beautiful Tristania.

Mercyside - Pretty good song. Vibeke sounds beautiful and the minimal death growls are great...but the total sound of the song seems kind of bland. The lyrics also are lacking as well. 3/5

Sanguine Sky - Great vocal performance by Vibeke and the feel of the song in general is very spine chilling, much like older Tristania songs. The only thing that seems to be lacking is the instrumentation. It just seems kind of dull and in the background. 3.5/5

Open Ground - Probably one of the best tracks on the album, and by Tristania in general. The sound is hypnotic and sinister...and the lyrics are amazing!!! It sends chills down my spine and the vocals are sung with such emotion. 5/5 ++++

The Ravens - This track is one of those dull and boring tracks. The lyrics don't catch my attention, the sound just bores the hell out of me, and even the vocals can't save it. It just becomes a haze in the background. 1/5

Destination Departure - The best track on the album. It's such a heart wrenching song that makes me cry every time I listen to it. It almost reaches the level of Angellore. (Not quite) Vibeke's vocal lines are so amazing and astounding, the lyrics touch my heart and it definitely redeems the previous deadbeat track. A major win for th band. 5/5 ++++++++

Down - At first, I wasn't favorable of this song at all, but it grew on me and now I view it as a great catchy song with good vocals especially by Vibeke. The lyrics aren’t the best, but they’re still pretty good and powerful in their own way. It has an overall angry feel to it that has potential…but it’s not angry enough. 4/5

Fate – Another deadbeat track. This song just doesn’t do the album any favors at all. It’s bland, boring, and just not worthy of any recognition. Not only that, but the deep guitar at the beginning irritates my ears. I don’t know why. 1/5

Lotus – This song is actually very captivating. The vocals are beautiful and spine chilling and the sound is so mesmerizing. The lyrics are emotional and all together it makes a very beautiful and amazing song. 5/5 +++

Sacrilege – Another epic win for the album! This song is just so cool sounding and epic! The way that the lyrics are sung is just so unique and satisfying, and the instrumentation is so driving and amazing. The lyrics are sung with a vengeance that sends chills to my bone. Definitely worth recognition. 5/5 +++

Deadlands – A beautiful song with an amazing performance by Vibeke. The lyrics are heartwrenching and the sound is so tender and great. 4.5/5

In The Wake – The song wasn’t that special to me. It wasn’t horrible, but it didn’t catch my attention in any way. 2/5

Ab Initio – A very nice song to listen to with very good vocals, but not necessarily a complete standout track. 3/5

Vocal Performance: 4.5/5
Instrumental Performance: 3.5/5
Lyrical Performance: 3/5
Overall Feeling: 3/5
Total: 14/20 (C-)
