Just an FYI: I actually do like Ashes so i'm not a BTV fanboi. That felt like they were touching on something interesting and different, but so far illumination isn't doing it for me. Maybe it's just because I don't like the production quality.

I disagree with the Lacuna Coil part  :P  :P  :P  they used to be boring, now they just suck!

Thats your opinion. Mad because they don't scream a portion of their lyrics? I just hope your not that closed minded, and have an actual reason for disliking them.    That's not the point of the thread anyway.

No, I'm not closed minded, The Gathering and Katatonia, Virgin Black are some of my faves. I don't like Lacuna Coil because most of their songs sound the same, and the lyrics don't make much sense at all. They are far from innovative, although I have to admit, Christina does have excellent voice. Their last album... well.... they sound more like "Lacuna KoRn"!

Lacuna Coil has a Pop/nu-metal sound, they should be compared to Evanescence.  I don't like Tristania to be mentioned with these bands because it discredits everything Tristania has accomplished . Of course that's my opinion (shared by many).

By the way I'm fully awared that it has Nothing to do with this thread, I just disagree with that "look at Lacuna Coil...." part.   ;)

I dunno, but I actually love the diversity on the new album. Down, the Ravens and Deadlands are amazing songs! (along with Mercyside, Fate and Sacriledge of course)

My point exactly. Great bands achieve longevity and success by diversifying their sound with each album. And I'm really really happy that Tristania chose this route. And the album was a winner!!! I can't take the repetitive bullshit of most bands these days
Congratulations guys!

Illumination was produced by the same person who did Karmacode. Both albums sound pop-ish and nu-metal.

The only difference is that Lacuna Coil fits this sound, Tristania does not.

Well if Illumination was nu-metal then it is some good fucking nu-metal I'll tell you that!
Cause if you haven't noticed, Lacuna Coil is utter shit. Putting LC and Tristania in the same statement is blasphemy!

Maybe LC isn't "your thing" but they have their moments as well. (Heaven's a Lie is a pretty good song IMO.)

With Waldemar's 'style' of producing the rythm-section of a band gets more attention (and isn't metal pretty rythym focused in general?). Being a rythm-nut myself, I don't mind at all. Granted, the way an album is produced can push it in a direction (for instance: "The Killers" are sometimes regarded Britpop, while they're not british in the first place), but I hear too many difference in style (no rap, no emo-screams, the prog-like parts here and there) to label this album nu-metal.

Having read this thread I would like to say that at the end of the day music is personal. I care not for how "nu-metal" an album sounds like, it doesn't have to even be metal, as long as there is something in the lyrics, music or vocals that resounds an emotion that I can relate to. Lacuna Coil and Tristania are two of my favourite bands because of this, and I love both Karmacode and Illumination.

no, i will not judge you for what you wrote up there but i will beg you to reconsider it. how many spins have you given Illumination? and how many spins have you given Karmacode? personally i think Illumination can't even be considered near Karmacode. heck, it's light years away. then again, Illumination pop-ish and nu-metal? are you sure?  have you heard rap, some guy/chick screaming his/her lungs out and lyrics that are repetitive and annoyingly meaningless? if you have than maybe you should just give it just a few more spins...

as for me Tristania just hit the jackpot with this album! it's something special. sure i miss the growls and i miss the synths but damn they just blew me away with Illumination. at first i was confused. i didn't know what to think. there was so much missing and so many new elements.. i got over it and now i find this album a perfect Tristania album, just like the rest. good job!

ps: Viva the goth rock elements. :D
and your light will it shine on
shine for you and me...
