Evenfall Latin Choir Lyrics
« on: 21 August 2006, 22:42:50 »

Hey Guys,

Love Tristania's Evenfall.

I noticed some of the older discussions regarding the Latin choir lyrics on Evenfall.

I'm quite confident the Latin choir lyrics
"Supratono Sepultu"
roughly translate to
"thundering atop your grave"

There is a word before she says "Supratono" though that I cannot make out. Any ideas?

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

I am quite confident that the word before Supratono Sepultu is Domini

In the beginning of the song (before the verse) the choir says two latin words (0:10 - 0:16), while Vibeke goes aaahhh. The first one sounds like Spiritus.

I think I got the latin lyrics figured finally

I think the word after  Spiritus  is Domitus, my knowledge of Latin is quite poor, the best translation I can do is ''the soul has been tamed''

That would make sense, since I think the song (and the album) is about mourning a dead woman.

I actually think that there are 3 words : Spiritus Domitus Est  ( The soul is tamed), which here can mean death, the passing into the afterlife and that Vibeke after the chorus sings Spiritus Domitus actually sings the word "Est" and not "aaaaa"

As for Domini Supratono Sepultu I don't know exactly what it means, I can only give a rough translation as I do not know Latin grammar well, something like " Lord, thunder above the buried" I think the words also could be Domini Supra Totus Sepultu, which translates as " Lord above all buried" or " Lord over all buried"

I have studied Latin for a year in 2000-2001 when I was a student in Classical Studies at the University of Ottawa

While the basics stayed, I forgot a lot of the grammar, my translations may not be grammatically perfect.
I have the CD Widow's Weeds and have been listening  Evenfall over and over to try to catch the words

That's great :D

What do you think about the choir parts during the verses? After the first line they shout something latin, while the second time they just say the same thing as Morten. I always hear something like this ''Call thy name at nightfall... spiritus!'' or something :P

I don't know, the choir parts during the verses are hard to understand, also a lot of Latin words sound alike.
I think the word after Cast thy name at nightfall is Dominus and after Reveal thy beauty is Domiti

I totally forgot the Latin grammar, I don't know what happened to my Latin dictionary, if I find it it will help a lot! It probably stayed at my mom's house after I moved as I did not have enough room for all my books in my small apartment

I love Tristania and love singing, you can't imagine the hours I put trying to figure the part of the lyrics that are not written in the lyrics.

I feel the same way sometimes. I once tried to map out all lyrics to The Sins of Thy Beloved's first album - drove me insane.
