Well do you think that WW should be used as a measuring stick for all gothic metal albums.

For me WW establishes the basis of a perfect gothic/doom album, so in that sense it can be legendary within the genre and legendary because Tristania hasn't stopped developing ever since.

Hell yeah, to tell you the truth I think Tristania epitiomizes gothic metal even more than Theater of Tragedy and Widow's Weeds can beat any ToT album (Velvet Darkness they fear, aegis...you name it!)

Everytime I get introduced to a new gothic metal band I always compare it to the WW album to see how it stacks up. None have yet been able to surpass it so for me WW owns this genre :)

There can't be a measuring stick for great music, I mean, I don't compare every Radiohead album I listen to to BTV, do I? ;)

It has nothing to do with what you think about Radiohead, it was just an example to unfold my thesis.
Take Courtney Love instead, or whatever you chose.

At the beginning I didn't like them much, too, but now I adore Ok Computer. It's just an album that's so difficult and sophisticated that it takes many hours to understand it.

Um...radiohead isn't gothic

Anyway, yeah back to the topic, I do believe that WW stacks up as one of the greatest gothic metal albums but I don't think it should be a measuring stick to rate others.

Legendary, maybe.
It would FOR SURE be with a re-recording, bringing it up to the quality of World Of Glass or Ashes, and probably what Illumination is going to be; but then again a re-recording will most likely not happen, just with all the Morten things. (This has probably been said a trillion times, I have not read any of the other posts so whateverrrr).

I think it is a great album, even with the poor guitar sounds; to me they are a little too staticy and don't really get there a lot unless the volume is being blasted.
I think that the masterpeices that are December Elegy, Evenfall, Angellore, My Lost Lenore, Midwintertears, and Pale Enchantress would make it into the legendary catagory.

Although I think later Tristania albums are more legendary, I am a die hard World Of Glass fan, I love ALL Tristania, but WOG a little more then all the rest.

I think Tristania first releases are the best ones, my favourite album is Widow's Weeds so I really think it's a legendary album, besides BTV.

I think Widow's Weeds is a real masterpiece.

WW not a gothic metal album? WTF? WW is fuc*ing epitome of gothic metal in its roots! So please Tristania, no re-recordings!!!

As I said many times, I believe Tristania has left a great seal and legacy to gothic metal genre with WW and BTV and I still prefer BTV to WW, and I guess it's hard to say it's a legendary album because gothic metal and the culture envolving it is still up and running, I'd say it has hit the top in the past couple of years, however, rare are album that still have the touch that those in mid/second half 90s did when I believe gothic metal was on it's tops (with Tristania, The Sins of Thy Beloved who IMO aren't really gothic, but somehow fit the image and the atmosphere of it, anyway, screw that, Theatre of Tragedy, Lacrimosa, .....). I think in 15 years I'm gonna be able to say that yes, Widow's Weeds is a legendary album, because it holds the band's best features and gothic metal's best features.

Don't shatter my dreams with re-recorings, nooooooooooo!!! Pliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis!!! (Ok, I had 4 coffees today and it's only 3pm, so excuse me for my emotional out-break  ;D hihi)

I dont consider WW as gothic metal. It's more doom. However, I prefer ToT's "Velvet Darkness...." over it because there is a better balance of vocals. WW is almost all harsh vocals (except for December Elegy).
