What a great idea! I'm not a gamer but I will definitely check this out. I think the concept is awesome but the mechanics of your idea are quite beyond me. If you have the ability (and the time!) to create this, I salute you.

Have you asked the band for their support for this concept? If they like it, they might be able to assist in some way. Also, have you thought about possible copyright concerns? You might need the band's permission for this. Either way, I like the way you think. Keep it up!

I'm glad you like the idea :) I promise I'll create this game, despite that I'm a total idiot for programming :) It's not impossible, just requires time and stamina.

Yup, I dropped a topic in the "Ask the band" thread, but no reply arrived so far. Which means, they have no problem with creating a game about themselves!

With this new engine, Victoria Horror might appear in the game ;)

Very well, folks, I've got news for ya :)

The Tristania 3D project is going smoothly. I'm not entirely sure, but I might publish the game in this year.
I would like to say a few words about the levels, the special items, and the whereabouts of the environments Einar Moen has to encounter.

- Levels

The game's levels - regardless of their location - will constantly change, as your progress is going on. While you may find the first few levels quite easy, or perhaps even boring, the situation will change dramatically in later stages. Don't you expect that a strategy which have worked on level 2 will also get you out of trouble in level 23. Of course, there are lots of useful strategies exist, which will always be effective during your journey, be well prepared for the increasing size and difficulty. Do not underestimate your enemy - they can outsmart you if you're not aware.

- Secret areas

Hidden areas are an essential part of every location you visit. There are a number of secret areas hidden in each level. Sometimes the entrance to such an area may appear obvious, but often it is not! Finding such areas can be time consuming, but it may be well worth the while, after all, you can't expect your enemies to just leave all the goodies lying around in the open for you! Moreover, findig hidden items and equipment is one thing - taking possession of them is another! It can be really frustating if you notice a Dark Matter Gun, or a Crucifix behind a fence or perhaps up high on a ledge, you desperately need it, but no matter how hard you try to find a way to get them, it's impossible. Some levels may have a "super secret" area that is especially difficult or tricky to find. These areas generally contain something special, such as a huge load of military supplies, a variety of holy icons, or perhaps access to some other kind of special area such as a secret level.

Before you would start to worry, let me remind you that it's absolutely not necessary to look for secrets. If you find yourself really low on ammo, or your soul strength is lower than Marianas Trench, spend your time looking for secret areas which will hold the badly needed munitions and health restores. Fighting off hordes of enemies with a knife may be very heroic, but pointless nonetheless. It's no good bravely wielding only your knife against dozens of enemies, when there may be a Dark Matter Gun hidden behind the wall next to you!

Also keep in mind that necessary items are never hidden at secret areas. Hallways and rooms which are mandatory to complete the stage can be reached through normal routes. This does NOT mean that it will always be crystal clear where should you go next (getting from point A to point B in a straight line would be ridiculously easy), the increasing difficulty of the game will surely effect the levels, but the necessary route to finish the level shall never be hidden so well that you're going to stuck on that location forever. However, small short-cuts between two points of the area may be hidden, and since these are considered as secret areas, you may expect that they shall not be empty.

- Deadly fluids

You will encounter this environmental hazard frequently, particulary at industrial levels. While roaming in clean water is absolutely safe, oozing pools of green slime, brown toxic mud, hot molten lava, or blobby black tar could do terrible things with your feet, and your soul strength. Of course, not all streaming fluids are dangerous, which - judged by their colour - cannot be fresh water, it's unimaginibly wise to try it before crossing over that green/red/black pool for the goodies in the next room.
There will be, however, many many cases where you must cross that oozing pool of disease to continue your way to the exit. Facing this problem, start looking for a pair of special brogues, which should be stored somewhere nearby. These brogues will protect your feet, irregardless what kind of toxic fluid you need to walk in. If you find and obtain these footwear, the monitor screen will turn to slightly green, meaning you can harmlessly wander through any type of chemical, mud, and slime. Instead of your pure feet, these brogues will take the damage, and sooner or later they'll be decimated. If the green colouring on the monitor screen starts to flash, it means the brogues have been damaged seriously, and the ooze has managed to chew its way through them. If you see this, quickly run out of the blob to the nearest piece of land, and take a deep breath. Picking up multiple heavy leather brogues will extend their lifetime nonetheless, but always keep a sharp lookout for safe landing spot in case the brogues' effect starts to wear off!
Heavy leather brogues are capable of absorbing dangerous radiation as well.

- Darkness is the kingdom?

Since you're a goth, darkness is your best friend. Is it? This time it's not entirely true! When darkness embraces you, it means you become an easy target for enemies all around, who know their territory very well, thus they will know where you are. You shall have an extremely hard duty to fight in rooms and hallways dressed entirely in darkness, since you can't see a thing. Being nearly blind in these areas will make you much more vulnerable. The flash of gun blasts may chase away the darkness for a second, but then the room will be entirely dark again.
Obviously, you're not a cat. You don't even need to be one to see perfectly in the dark. All you need to do is find a Lantern somewhere in the level (if there is one provided). Just pick up the Lantern, and there! Problem solved! Wherever you go, the entire area will be engulfed by the light of your Lantern, and you will be able to see perfectly. Hussle up though, as your Lantern burns up its oil, first it will start to flicker, then goes off. Getting hold of multiple Lanterns will ensure the perfect lighting for a longer period of time. These Lanterns consume their oil quickly, therefore watch carefully - while you can!

- Suddenly I feel much better!

Wherever you will roam - our reality or the gothic realm - you may stumble across special areas, where spending some time will regenerate your lost soul strength. These are very valuable and important. You don't need to desperately secure every drop of absinthe you find. If you feel weak, return to that healing spot (if you can, that is), and spend some time with relaxing - your lost soul strength will be back on 100% shortly. In every second, your health will increase with 2%, up to 100%. Sure you have to relax for a short time to feel completely revitalized, but it will never run out.

- Keys

Although they look different, oridinary keys and special gothic keys are opening the same doors, if their colour matches.

- Death-traps

This is the newest addition. While looking for secrets, experienced adventurers also take death-traps into account. These nasty little surprises are scattered throughout the levels - and once you're in, you're as good as dead. Getting out such death-traps is not an easy task, and perhaps it will only delay the inevitable - you'll get out alive just to fall in yet another death-trap! Of course if you're on 200% soul strength, or you're invulnerable of the moment, you will survive...who knows. This does not mean you can take these death-traps lightly.
Where are they? First thing's first: You can only evade a trap, if you KNOW it's there. Pay extreme attention for anything unusual. Large heaps of dead bodies? Suspicious looking switch? Oddly coloured floor panel? They ALL could be death-traps. Maybe there is a deep pit under that brightly coloured floor panel, and if you step on it, you shall fall into a bottomless chasm filled with bloodthirsty hordes of monsters, who'll down you in one bite?
Keep yourself away from areas where you suspect that something is fishy about them.

I shall keep you informed if I reached another stage of the game making!

Still going strong, so many years later! Impressive, Reactorfighter! Well, as you said, what DOOM-mapping requires is time & stamina... ;)

A few questions - this is still happening on the ZDOOM engine, correct? So what you're doing is essentially making a megawad, exchanging all the sprites & levels of the iwad?

PS: Are you involved in the Doomworld community?

Of course, I will not ditch this wonderful project :) This'll be one of the VERY few games where we could actually control one of the band's members instead of some no-name guy with a rifle. Besides, who would NOT want to rescue Vibeke from certain death? :)

First I wanted to use ZDoom engine, then I changed to jDoom (although I can't really tell the difference between them, I still have much to learn). The reason is simple: jDoom can handle digital music!
I've tired of hearing poor MIDI and MOD and such ancient music formats, so I said: the main condition for creating this game is the digital music (MP3, WAV, OGG, WMA, whatever). I took a selection of the finest songs for Tristania 3D to ensure complete satisfaction, which MIDI music could not provide.

I've also created several extremely nice wall and floor pieces, even animated ones which you shall see once the game is ready. The hardest part is unquestionably the level editing, since I never designed anything in real 3-D environment (Wolfenstein 3D map editor was the simplest thing on Earth), so it takes many many practice. I can assure you, though, you will not be disappointed with the levels (or the story for that matter) :)

Weapon selection is large an unusual. There shall be 8 different weapons, and unlike similar games, I will NOT flood the whole level with tons of ammunition and weapons (if possible, I'll do several occassions when Einar loses all his firearms to make the game less easy), so it's wise not to shoot mindlessly all around the place, or your ammunition will run out in no time :)

1-a: Dagger. It's the weakest weapon alright, but it doesn't require any ammunition. I'll also try to make the dagger silent (so if you stab, it will not alert enemies nearby). Its primary usage should be as stealth weapon.
It's worth mentioning that you may sometimes find a Blessed Dagger on certain levels. Picking it up will restore all lost soul strength, plus makes the Dagger 10 times stronger throughout the whole level. Since this is quite a valuable item, it'll be hidden at secret areas mostly.

1-b: Shocker. Since the gothic and steampunk sub-culture are quite close to each other, I figured out this steampunk invention. This electronic shocker also does not require ammunition, and it can continuously electrocute the enemy to death. Some hostile entities are sensitive for high voltage, and therefore shocking it will keep him from attacking. Using the steampunk shocker is stronger than the Dagger, but it is noisy, and the foes nearby will be alerted by its usage.

2: PCV. A semi-automatic 9mm handgun with light firepower and low rate of fire. Your first firearm.

3-a: Merkov. This handy-dandy shotgun is a favorized firearm, it has low rate of fire, but a really nice blast strength, which you will find extremely useful. Also note that the Merkov is reliable and accurate for bigger distances too.

3-b: SPAR. It is an enchanted...erm...enhanced version of the Merkov, for close combats, this is the best weapon. It carries out a double blast compared to the Merkov, causing double damage (if all pellets hit). However, its reloading time is longer, and its totally inaccurate for bigger distances. Oh yea...and it consumes 2 shotgun shells instead of one.

4: Sabrine mk3. This nimble little machine gun has a splendid rate of fire. It receives ammo through a bandolier, so there is no reloading needed. Take into account that it consumes ammunition at an incredible rate.

5: AKN Assault. Your first heavy weapon is the AKN Assault bazooka. Primarily used as an armor-piercing weapon. This highly accurate bulkly rocket launcher bears heavy firepower for massive damage. It can tear groups  of enemies into shreds, and bring even the stronger enemies down their knees. Well not recommended for small terms of combat, its splash damage can easily backfire and kill Einar as well.

6: (this weapon profile is not yet filled)

7: Dark Matter Gun. This steampunk invention is considered the most dangerous weapon in (and beyond) the known universe. I would not get too scientific here, let's just say that the dark matter (negative matter) is lethal to everything which is made of something. The Dark Matter Gun is slow, and consumes its stored dark matter at incredible rate. Still, if you have the Dark Matter Gun in your possession, mostly you don't need any weapons other than this. The launched dark matter consumes up enemies in a large blast radius around you, leaving you totally unharmed. Be sure, though, that you have enough ammunition to use this.

I've just finished designing some more objects for the game. Some of my folks have came up with nice ideas which I would like to share, and ask your opinions about, whether or not they should be in the game.

Oh, about the answer for pellevin - no, I'm a member at NewDoom community :)

The first thing is about secret levels. Yup, they will exist, and it's up to you to find'em! There shall be at least 3 secret levels, and I can assure you, they'll gonna be a REAL challenge!!!
We have agreed in to have at least 3 secret level for the 3 different kind of secret level we could make.

¤ Normal secret level - This is much like the other levels in the game, but generally more challenging.

¤ Super secret level - This secret level will have some unique theme which you shall experience REAL soon. The newest concept for a super secret level is called "Mirror rooms".

¤ Challenge level - Unlike any other levels in Tristania 3D, Challenge level is different. You will lose all your weapons at the start of the level, leaving you with only a PCV, and a Dagger, and you have to solve the whole level with these weapons provided. At the end of the Challenge level, glorious prizes and gigantic amounts of power-ups will wait for you as a reward. This is something which'll worth fighting through the level for - especially taking into account that later levels are far from easy.
There will be, however, an emergency exit near the start of the Challenge level, if someone finds the going too tough, he can evacuate through the emergency exit safely. However such cowardice has its own punishment: he has to start the next level only with his PCV and Dagger!

The second thing I would like to leak out are two enemy profiles which you might find interesting. I can't guarantee that they will really appear in the game (if I can make'em work properly, they WILL appear), but it's fine for an appetizer.

¤ Hostile Vibeke - These evil minions look exactly like Vibeke, but don't be fooled - they aren't! Carrying AKN Assault bazookas, they'll be extremely painful, especially in groups! Luckily these spirits are easy to kill, and they dissipate as soon as you fire the last shoot on them.

¤ Fremen - Now you're in BIG trouble!!! Fremen are tough warriors with the ability of being completely invisible!!!! They fight for anyone, but recent reports say that they hooked up with the satanists. Not just "partially" invisible, but ENTIRELY invisible. Their cover, however, will disappear when they're attacking, and they become visible for a short time, which you should use and kill'em. Fremen are also easy to kill alright, but it's much easier said than done. Their invisibility gives them serious advantage, especially in dark areas. They're equipped with Sabrine mk3 machine guns.

As soon as I'm done with the level design and graphics, I will provide you new screenshots, like I did before :)

Well, modelling is VERY VERY advanced stuff in Doom 3. I've thought about it, but creating a Total Conversion of Doom 3 would take me more than fifteen years, and since I ain't a programmer, it'd be guaranteed to be full of bugs.
(I downloaded several fan-made maps for Doom 3, and many of them has obvious glitches which this game should not have).

Besides, I don't want to create a "mod", since it'd require Doom 3 as well, and it's not freeware (meaning that I cannot publish over the Internet), whilst using a completely free engine would guarantee that I can distribute Tristania 3D everywhere I want :) You know...copyright issues and stuff...

Not to mention that creating graphical resources for Doom 3 takes slightly more time and effort...  :P

About the copyright thing - if you are aiming at making a fully "legal" game, then you can't include original Tristania music, which i believe was your plan?

That's right :) if I'd start to screw around in Doom 3 modelling and stuff, it'd take years, and the game would grow to enormous size (more than 2-3 gigabytes), which is almost impossible to download with slower internet connection, and it also tends to break a lot.

Well, you're somewhat right about the Tristania music, it cannot be used in such ways - THIS game will be the only exception.

Since this game is all about Tristania, it's quite evident I'll use many of their songs (consider this game as an advertisement for the band), but if still violates some copyright, I'll consultate with the band members about this. I think they would like the idea - not many bands have their own computer game!

All other songs which can be heard in the game are written by my favourite band called Heavy Troopers, and they're completely free :) And trust me, those songs WILL be as worthy as Tristania's songs :) I can provide a full in-game tunes list if you desire :)

EoD engine Tristania3D at its finest

Welcome back, guys! I think I might have some good news for you.

AReyeP and MCS have released the EoD engine, which means, our team shall develop Tristania3D under the EoD engine. After countless debates, pros and contras, we've finally settled about Tristania3D should be created in EoD engine, which'll truly fulfill everyone's request.

EoD engine is more advanced than the Doom engine in lots of aspects, but also less sophiscated in some other things. One thing is for sure - it's a LOT easier, flexible, and ensures shorter development time - which is already too high now. However, I was always a man of my words, and if I say there will be Tristania3D...then you can count in me. I know, you heard this a million times before, therefore I decided to invite you into our workshop.

First of all, Tristania3D is created with WDC, which is a graphical programming application rather than text-based, giving us here at the Lambda Team Headquarters a lot of opportunities (and of course, a lot of headache, when something refuses to work, and the project collapses on itself). With WDC, Tristania3D is an open book, letting us to edit every possible bit of the upcoming game. Sometimes we also use ChaosEdit, but WDC was always favorized.

Our team have decided about Tristania3D's length - the whole game will consist 38 levels, with 26 regular levels and 12 secret levels. Among the twelve secret levels, there shall be 4 normal secret levels, 5 super secret levels and 3 challenges. Creating 38 levels won't be a minute, I can tell you all about it, luckily, we already own the projects we started years ago.

At first sight, Tristania3D might seem to be less advanced than in Doom engine, but don't be fooled - its features are truly admirable, providing things that even Doom could not. Here are some features Tristania3D offers:

- Indoor-outdoor environments
- A special difficulty level with unlimited lives but limited save game possibilities
- Teleporting
- Lots of environmental hazards and traps
- 12 secrets levels, three different types as I mentioned
- Seven weapons
- Smart enemies
- Wall switches for hidden doors and certain traps
- Useful items (Backpack, holy icons, portable healing item)
- Easter Eggs
- Much more!

The first step - and unquestionably the hardest - was the EoD source code modifications, which have allowed all these features for us. Here in this screenshot, you can see how I added the fifh weapon (the SmartGun).

The second snippet shows you the actual level creating method. Every level is made of walls, sprites (objects, traps, enemies etc), and triggers. The first few levels will be short and easy, but as the game progresses, you'll encounter bigger and more complicated levels, tougher enemies, and more lethal traps. None of the levels will be frustatingly difficult and impossible, yet, this doesn't mean you can take the areas lightly. You will see what I mean.

The third leaked image shows you how the work is done in WDC. Every game part has its own class, and within the classes, there are the working frames for Tristania3D. Every wall, every floor, everything has its own image, perhaps even more than one images. This one shows the third attack frame with the Sabrine MK3.

Fourth leaked image, also working in WDC. Everything you see is made of tiny pixels. 64x64 pixels to be exact. This makes 4096 pixels alltogether. Working with walltypes is a lot harder, because walls can NOT contain transparent pixels (the purple colour). If we do it anywayz, Tristania3D will crash upon compilation. Creating static objects are easier...well...depending on what we create. This table made of white marble is one of the easier objects we created.

Tables, furniture and usable objects (such as the clock) are simple. Creating statues, however, is EXTREMELY time consuming, and is VERY advanced stuff. Never try this at home.

Ingame graphics, texts, pictures and everything else is also created in WDC. Their size is irregular, and even with the usage of medium bases, they took quite a long time of creation of perfection. A 64x64 wall tile is nothing compared to these. An image like this usually takes 2-3 days to be ready.

Tristania3D also offers textured floors and ceiling, enhancing the gothic environment (this was tested). Of course, this gives us pluswork. I created this pale green coloured seamless flower floortile three days ago, and is truly spectacular. Needless to say that every floor/ceiling tile needs to be seamless, which takes up LOTS of time to test even one floortype. Stone, bricks and tiles are time-consuming, tiresome investments, outdoor grass, snow, concrete, bract etc. are easier.

Last, but not least - the new title screen, created in WDC.

As you can see, Tristania3D is far from cancelled - in fact, it's being created in this very moment, as you read these words of mine. Our team also managed to get it work under Windows XP without the necessity of an emulator. This way, however, music and certain sounds can't be heard. Windows Vista and 7 will not run Tristania3D without an emulator, so when we release the game, we shall also provide you with one for maximum efficiency.

If everything goes right, we can also post a gameplay video in the autumn. Stay tuned for more information!

Tristania 3D

Shopping??? Tristania3D will be COMPLETELY free, with all the extras you can expect! I'm a militarist, an ally for every dark-goth :) They would be the last people on Earth who I would charge for a game! When it will be ready, you can download it for absolutely free WITHOUT any registration, screwing around and payment!

And what the game extras will be? (for now)

- Emulator, just in case Tristania3D won't start, or you want to hear the music (running under Windows, Tristania3D doesn't play music)
- Full game manual, including a hidden cheat feature, and the usage of the emulator
- Full MP3 tracks of level background songs

We're also thinking about something like a contest - if a player manages to complete Tristania3D under "Extreme" difficulty with 100% secret ratio, a VERY SPECIAL surprise he'll get - without cheating, of course.
On each level of Tristania3D, there are hidden areas (except the final secret level), particulary hidden behind pushable walls. The secret door to these areas might be pretty obvious sometimes, but in other cases, it won't! Some levels may have a dozen hidden areas, some other levels might hold only 1-2 secrets. You will know it when you see it. A few levels will also have a "super secret" area, which is especially tricky and hard to find, and usually rewards its finder with something spectacular...such as a secret level.

To achieve 100% secret ratio upon game completion, you'll need to

- Find every hidden area on each level
- Find all normal secret levels (Dead sector, Wormhole, Ssssh!, Goodbye Kitty!)
- Find all super secret levels (Greed, Mirror rooms, Time-runner, Honour, Hypercubed!!!)
- Find all three challenges

I wonder if someone will be capable of doing that, and achieve victory with 100% secret ratio. It's far from impossible, but don't get me wrong - it will NOT be easy!

Well, to be honest, EoD engine doesn't support online gaming (and we don't own a server which online gaming requires). Tristania3D will be a single player game only, starring Einar Moen (the story will explain what's going on with the other band members). The other band members also play important role throught the game. We've tried everything with the source code to allow the other band members as a selectable character, but it didn't work...EoD engine doesn't allow us to create a character selection screen and methods.

We, however, did manage to create some fancy little surprises for you, hidden in the game. I wouldn't want to spoil all the fun, so I just mention a few of them.

- Try using toilets, gramophones and clocks! You'll get funny results! ;)
- Exploding oil drums. The lack of electricity requires the usage of torches, and quite a lot of petrochemicals. These are stored in red barrels, and are quite sensitive for gunfire. Blowing them up will cause serious destruction around!
- Stone coloumns. At higher-class indoor areas - such as the Falanster - there are lot of white stone coloumns. Many of these pillars are very rickety, and can be knocked down with brute force. Check them out - many secret doors are hidden behind these rickety coloumns!
- Ever wanted to kill Hello Kitty? Now you'll have the chance!!!
- The super secret level "Greed" is one of the most special levels we are going to construct. It consists a totally empty outer shell, and an inner chamber with a SHIPLOAD of treasure, waiting for you to grab!
The problem is, there will be eight Suicide Drones (the most LOATHSOME enemy throughout the game) who'll be also after the treasure in the moment you enter the inner chamber. As long as there are treasure around, the Suicide Drones will leave you alone (except if you get too close to them), however, after all the treasure is gone, you're fair game!!!
Moreover, the only power-up you find on that level is the Icon of Regeneration at the center of the level. This is the exact place where the Gate key will appear in the very moment all the treasure is gone (you will hear a special gong sound when this happens). So you have the choice - play safely, and wait for the key to appear, or risk your neck and go for the gold!

And these were only TWO secret levels...there'll be 10 more...
